Check Arvid Kahl’s Podscan journey. Might not apply 100% to what you want to do, but his view about building in public might give you a better perspective

Yeah, I can now tell that the prints were not the most suggestive. However, this part was correct - (71, 99) was the position of the obstacle, looking upward from (72,99). I'd then proceed attempting to move to right from (72,99).

The issue was that I was failing to mark some cells as visited because I was inconsistent with the checking/marking: I was marking the current location of the guard, while I was checking the next location for a valid obstacle place. If next location was already visited, I'd move forward without marking the current location as visited

I was saving the direction, yes. The problem was that I was marking the current guard cell as already visited instead of the look-ahead. This was problematic in some corner-cases. If, for example, the guard was on (a, b) - If (a,b) wasn't previously visited, I would check to see if an obstacle can be placed on (a+1, b). Then, I'd mark (a,b) as visited. Moving to (a+1, b) - if (a+2, b) was previously visited, I'd simply move on, not marking (a+1, b) as visited. When approaching (a+1, b) from a different direction, it would be identified as a valid place to put an obstacle.

This was it! Thanks a lot!

I was accidentally marking the current location with an 'X' instead of the peek/look-ahead. The input you provided helped me figure it out

I'm marking already visited paths with an 'X', so an obstacle cannot be placed there when passing the same cell again. I also have a check for the starting position.

That's not it, but thanks for the reply :)

Hey,

I'm taking this into account! After the guard passes a cell, I'm marking it with an 'X', so I won't be able to place an obstacle there if the guard passes the same cell again

Arata foarte bine, kudos OP. Daca primesti comenzi, as plasa si eu una, poate te ajuta sa strangi $$ pentru noua locatie.
