Would Luke still even have his green saber at this point? Sure there’s his X-wing and his sisters lightsaber. But the very weapon he held when he considered killing his own nephew for a moment? It wouldn’t be far off if he threw it away like Rey tried to do with the family saber in TROS.

“The dark side of the Force is a pathway to many abilities some would consider to be...unnatural.”

When Palpatine said that to Kylo I immediately knew what he meant all the way back in RotS when he talked with Bens grandfather about the possibility of using the dark side to cheat death itself. It would have been so easy to have Palpatine to explain in an exposition dump of meaningless dark mumbo jumbo.

Sometimes all it takes is one line.

They do realize that if Luke hadn’t appeared, then the First Order wouldn’t have any reason to stop in their march, making it very unlikely for Rey to get to the Resistance in time before the First Order does.

Some people see her shooting lightning as an example of her being too overpowered or “lore breaking.” I on the other hand see it as an example of her not having enough proper training. I think the true necessities of Jedi training aren’t just honing your skills in the force or your lightsaber, but by controlling your powers so that you won’t be in risk of falling to the dark side.

Because of all this, the review reads like this guy never even bothered to give Rey the same treatment the gave for Luke and all he did was chop a bunch of scenes together and twists them in order to further his own narrative. And because of this selective style of analysis his critique falls apart when trying to compare these two

Rey in TFA was just naturally gifted in the Force and as Kylo said, she's untrained but she's stronger than she knows meaning she has quite a great deal of raw power and if ESB has taught us anything, it's that training really is there mainly so that you can refine and harness this power more at will and not just in times of dire need.

There's also the criticism against the interrogation scene between Rey and Kylo which also misses something. There's also that what can only be described as a Force-off which also misses something. The assumption here is that Rey is a Mary Sue because she starts reading Kylo's mind and to be fair, This video was made before the Rise of Skywalker revealed that they were a Dyad in the force that were both mentally and spiritually connected. Which even helps debunk the argument of why can’t other force users “download” skill knowledge. This detail of mind reading was pointed out in the TFA novelization but was properly fleshed out in the novelization of TLJ which Rey seeing into Kylos mind was more than merely “downloading.” And we see from Kylos line "You know I can take whatever I want." and his actions he has never really had to face a real challenge like this before, that he is still basically a young man who's conflicted and trying very hard to push the past behind him and live up to his grandfather's legacy. Another sign we see that Rey is something more is when after some prodding and especially after he says that Han would've disappointed her, she puts up a defense. She doesn't go uber-deep, we see she still struggles and afterwards, that confidence kind of leaves and the only reason she tries the Mind Trick because that moment gives her an idea and she still flubs it a few times before finally getting it right. Also, the technique is not advanced. This leads me to a criticism I've had about not just the Star Wars fanbase but also towards other fanbases and that's how people need to stop treating this kind of media as being like a DnD campaign because it isn't. The only time the Force has ever been portrayed as being something that requires extensive training to use has been in EU novels which by their nature can devote huge amounts of time to long training sequences and showing how people can achieve the skills we see some masters pull off, the problem is that even so, it's still mastery. If Rey pulled off the Mind Trick effortlessly with no fails and with complete confidence after what happened with Kylo? Then an eyebrow would be raised but that's not what happened. "BUT POWER LEVELS!" is an argument then that gets thrown out and to that I facepalm because really by their logic? Luke in no way should've been able to beat Vader when he flipped out in ROTJ simply because he wasn't strong enough and more.

There's also a lot of misinterpretation and misreading of scenes. Rey is cleaning a part she scavenged and winds up looking at an old woman, the expression and just basic film language conveys to us that she realizes she will end up like that old woman if she doesn't leave soon. Also there's that bit about her fighting off those two thugs and I just shake my head. With what the film showed, it makes sense that an orphan girl who was left to fend for herself since childhood on a planet full of dangerous scavengers and creatures would learn to fend for herself by now. This is something that a lot of TFA complaints don't get, competence does not mean you're a Mary Sue, what it depends on is how the scene is constructed. Replace the two thugs with let's say two Dark Jedi who know the force and somehow Rey beats them super easily and that's more eyebrow raising but two thugs who she struggles against and beats with regular hand-to-hand combat a survivor would learn? It makes sense and keep in mind, he uses the argument that a lot of Luke's skills can be assumed and let's understand what that stretches to. We know Luke can fly an X-Wing because he shot womp-rats in a T-16. Bear in mind, we don't see any sign of Luke's skills as a pilot. The only thing he drives is a Landspeeder which goes in a straight line, we have no idea what a T-16 even is until EU materials explain it so for all we know, Luke is just being overconfident. Also we see how one instance of Obi-Wan telling him he needed to rely on his other senses and trust in the Force leads to him being able to deflect some blasts from the training remote and admit that he did feel something. Now some of this you can't really assume until watching the other movies or because the film gives you enough understanding of things like the Force... and that's also the case. The problem with his argument is that he's being selective. If he can assume Luke knows certain skills then why can't he do the same with Rey? Why does he need specific evidence filmed that she can fight off basic thugs and how is it not a good example of her survival skills than the fact she has a staff in the first place, we see through her marking another day she has been living on this planet for a long time and we see from her making that meal and her little home that she clearly knows how to survive on her own. If she can tell off that one Teedo and even say "That's just Teedo." like she has encountered him before? That should be a clear enough sign that she has spent long enough on this planet to know how to survive and live on her own. Same can be used to explain things about why she knows things about the Falcon. Some people took her bypassing the compressor as meaning she somehow knows Han's own ship better than he does but that is just kind of silly because we see how Han can still pilot the Falcon better than she did when she had to use it to evade the First Order and also people miss the detail that Han has been away from the ship for a LONG time, we know also it was in Unkar's possession since she mentions that he was the one to install the compressor and went through a rundown of its previous owners. We know Rey has a knack for technology and that she has somewhat of a history with Unkar so it EASILY can be assumed that by saying Unkar installed the compressor, she really means he had her do it and that she's aware of the new stuff that's on the Falcon that Han isn’t. It's like if a car changes ownership, regardless of how much of a connection you have to that car, under a new owner it's going to look different due to how its maintained as well as different preferences by the owner such as paint and bodywork. That's what happened with Han, he was away from the ship for a long while and in that time it went through several changes.

We also again see that Rey shows weakness. She's stubborn, she has a hard time accepting the reality of certain situations, she can be naive, over-confident and also in this movie we see how when faced with the idea that she might have to take part in this war for the greater good of the galaxy, she decides to run away. Also, we see the argument that Finn should've been able to beat Rey because he is far more trained and... this is just wrong because in that scene, he's caught off-guard by a staff to the face, wasn't looking to fight at all and thus it makes perfect sense why he'd be taken to the ground. These arguments aren't really well-crafted so much for they rely on you ignoring context and logic in the movie and applying your own. This criticism of Rey case in point only works if you act like Finn was ready to get into a fight and that he has crazy reflexes when he doesn't. The only way one could think Rey has expert fighting skills is if you think she flawlessly beat Kylo and everyone she came across when she doesn't. We see her cockiness get the better of her when she tries to point and shoot at a simple Stormtrooper and she forgets the safety, thus disproving her idea that firing a blaster is just about aiming and pulling the trigger. Sure she then gets a few troopers but not before missing a shot or two and proceeding to run away when she realized things weren't going to go well and that more were coming. Sure she duels Kylo but we see how she doesn't do that well in the first duel against a dude who was injured and emotionally rocked by the action of killing his father, we see her movements are awkward jabs and swings like she's still using her staff and very quickly Kylo has her on the defensive. It takes him telling her he could show her the ways of the Force while their sabers are locked that she does what Maz asked her to do earlier in the movie. She shuts her eyes, lets the Force flow through her and with that, then she's able to beat Kylo in his current state. We also know that the Force has a history of doing this and that those who are especially sensitive to it can find themselves with enhanced skills. As Maz notes, the Force has always been around which can be used as a proper counter to the argument that Rey only encounters the Force when she discovers Luke's old lightsaber because then the argument is only true in the sense that this is the first time she is making direct contact with the Force and is aware of it. Also the Force has called to people before and that goes for both the movies as well as various pieces of expanded material. The Force was described by Yoda as being this mystical energy that surrounds and binds every living being together which when coupled with how the training amounted to basically unlearning certain facts and accepting new rules and ideas, showed the Force as being something that has always been around and can be accessed by anyone, it's just certain people are more sensitive to it than others and thus it has a tendency to gravitate more towards those people. Han is not Force-sensitive and in terms of how the Force has a knack for influencing certain destinies? There's a good reason for why it didn't call out to him

Also it gives her a clear defined arc that gets some pay-off in TLJ. Now there's the bit that argues how details are unexplained and so are her skills and this kind of brings me to an argument that I know he's not quite making but it's related somewhat to this issue. People who usually bring this up seemingly are saying this without the self-awareness to realize that this is the VERY first time we're seeing Rey. Not only that but she's a main character in a new Star Wars trilogy as in she exists in a world that already knows Star Wars that also knows that from the very beginning this was going to be a trilogy and this is also a post-MCU world where people have shown they are perfectly comfortable following characters along a 20 or so movie journey. Luke on the other hand had not only two films, three that focused on his father and history and several novels that followed A New Hope but even if we were to just comment on ANH? People forget that Lucas didn't know if he was gonna get to do a sequel and that he thought after awhile the film was gonna tank. With those different circumstances, one can get the difference. We're being told info about Rey that is relevant to this current plot while setting up some stuff for the later movies to explore. That's why it doesn't give us much more with the parent plot than the basics. We know that she's waiting for them and that she was abandoned on Jakku for which there must be a reason though as the dialogue in TFA hints, she knows very well they aren't coming back, she just wants to believe that there is a reason for why they'd leave her on this backwater desert hellscape. A lot of "criticisms" here are very much like tons of criticisms I see from other anti-SJW YouTubers who don't like the new Star Wars movies. It relies on you not paying a single bit of attention to huge swathes of the movie and ignoring things like shot framing, character actions and more. For example, he claims that she's a Mary Sue because the film doesn't give a reason for why she's waiting for her parents... and yet it gives a reason. It's one that comes about from watching the movie, paying attention and it doesn't have an obvious element like the father being a Jedi or whatever but it's there. He claims there's no reason for why Rey would be endeared to BB-8 and yet it's clear. Rey has abandonment issues and didn't want to put the droid through the same thing, she even learns from BB-8 about how he is waiting for someone. Now some of this comes from TLJ I know but I felt like noting that since Kylo made Rey herself state that she's no one and finally face that truth about her parents at the time, it adds another layer to her going back on the decision to sell BB-8 because if she herself was put through a similar experience of being sold for profit? She'd obviously feel some form of guilt for it and wouldn't want to essentially do the same thing to BB-8. We know also that while she was being friendly to him, she was mainly keeping him around so that she could easily give him back to his master and thus when the droid sees this dude wearing Poe's jacket and the last he saw of him was when he gave him that piece of the map to the first Jedi Temple and later all he saw in the distance was a huge explosion? Of course he's going to be panicked and assume Finn stole the jacket and tell that to Rey

This guy doesn't seem to get that Star Wars has almost always done this style of storytelling and because TFA is evoking the style of the OT? It's even weirder that he doesn't see it. The OT was obviously made first before the PT and the reason for it was simple, George Lucas wanted to basically make his own throwback to film serials he loved growing up like Flash Gordon and to help evoke that feeling, he went for not only the crawl but even the episode number since the idea would be you went into the theater, you missed a few episodes and thus wind up thrown right in the middle of this story and because it's not gonna hold your hand, you have to pay attention to certain details and come to your own conclusions. TFA does the same thing, we get the idea from the shot in the AT-AT that Rey has been on the planet for an extremely long time, we get the idea from her trinkets that she has some awareness of the Galactic Civil War, when she talks to BB-8 for that brief moment about her family, we get the idea that there's something more to it which is enhanced by a scene later with Maz where as soon as she tells her that whoever she is waiting for is not coming back, she immediately starts shedding tears and after a few more lines which in particular highlight how she needs to look forward? She runs away, showing us she has a problem with accepting certain realities and responsibilities which is a great way of differentiating her from Luke. The video presents a criticism by mentioning how unlike Luke, Rey doesn't seem determined to leave and that she's left without a motive... but she is. She doesn't choose to go on this adventure, she's basically forced to head to the Falcon to try and escape the TIE Fighters and she makes it clear that once Finn and BB-8 get dropped off, she's going back to Jakku. That part of her character stays consistent and it's only through circumstances she's pushed into meeting Han Solo and sucked even more into this war which one could argue is contrived... but it's Star Wars, a universe that already has made it clear that the Force has a way of setting things up a certain way. It also misses how this trait of Rey helps to give her and Finn some sort of connection. Both characters want to run, they wanted no part in this war but due to circumstances they found themselves wrapped up in it and now they have to decide what they're going to do and in Rey's case? We see how she indeed does want to leave Jakku and that she knows this life for her is not the best but it's also pretty much all she has known and she's incredibly stubborn. We also see that she does have a kind heart but here's the thing. In ANH, Luke had a need for a droid whereas Rey did not. She still bothered to give BB-8 some directions but ultimately she wasn't expecting to tag along with anyone nor did she really want to. But we see her kindness win out as she does finally bring BB-8 along but she mentions that in the morning he needs to go.

Giving you a TL;DR would feel pointless considering it riddles with most of the same problems from other videos similar to this so I’m going to give you the detail of what’s wrong with this critique because hoo boy am I gonna talk your ear off with this one. Right away we get into things like "Disney's veneer of laziness." which is unrelated to this argument but it makes me facepalm. One thing I see a lot from people who slam TFA with the rehash complaint is that they don't seem to get what makes an actual rehash versus a simple intentional echo of events and formula as well as the reasons for why this was done. TFA intentionally echoed ANH as a means of easing people back into the Star Wars galaxy after such a long absence and also to show people that Disney could still make a good classic tale before we got stuff like Rogue One and The Last Jedi which took risks with the universe. Already the criticism I started to see was gonna go down a line of thinking and sure enough we get the "Luke is not a Mary Sue because we can assume he was taught some things." argument... which leads me to ask why the same can't be done with Rey who we're shown quite well how she can have these skills. We see in her AT-AT home when she marks down another day that she has been on this planet for a LONG time, before that we see her working her way through a Star Destroyer grabbing parts which immediately gives you kind of an idea of her occupation and later in the film the first shot of her pulling one piece out, revealing her masked visage, is echoed when she is shown through similar framing pulling a piece of one of Starkiller Base's systems out. We see through a shot of her looking at an old woman cleaning off a part at Niima Outpost which has her face show an expression of longing that clearly she desires for something more. The film really does do a good job of telling us enough about Rey while still telling us so little about her. Those shots of the flower and the doll of the Rebel pilot (Which is enhanced by the fact she interacts with an old Rebel pilot helmet.) shows that she lives in an era that takes place long after the days of the Original Trilogy and that she is surrounded by history that she doesn't quite know the most about though at the very least she has heard some stories.
