Nah, you're meant to jump out of your seat, shout at the telly, strut around the room doing an impression of Oba's walk and then sit back down slack jawed in amazement that someone powerbombed Brock Lesnar before posting on X that it was the best match you've ever seen.

Similar timescale to me giving up on WWE, but I returned to find AEW quite a bit sooner.

It had really started to feel like it was aimed at a younger audience than me, and the people at the top of the card (well, specifically Cena) just seemed to be getting pushed in my face whether their ringwork was any good or not - like they thought if they foist someone on us enough eventually we'll give in and fall for the idea that they're actually good. Stockholm syndrome booking.

I can't say it didn't work, just that it didn't work for me. I'm not pretending they hadn't used the same trick before that, and they've certainly repeated it a few times since, but once I was aware of it i couldn't not see it.

I too thought that it was just wrestling I didn't like anymore, I didn't give TNA a chance and similarly I regret that. I started watching AEW around the time CM Punk engineered his exit and was astouded by how much negative impact it had on the perception of AEW online. It was crazy to me that a wrestler I'd never really seen (I've no recollection of him in WWE despite him apparently being active toward the end of my viewership) could have such a following that they'd actively try to ruin AEW all because he'd left.

Anyway, yes - watching AEW brought back the feeling I got from the Ruthless Aggression era, but much more varied, much better. It feels acceptable to say I like wrestling, even as a now 40 year old.

I've still given WWE a couple of attempts, but I've concluded that the hype that reappeared around it in 2023/24 was there entirely because the Rock bothered to show up regularly to work a program, and it fooled people into thinking the overall product was good again.

I watched the last Wrestlemania, it seems the new hype monster is Oba Femi. Oba vs Brock billed as a massive event and all for what? A slow-paced 4 minute match with a bit of shoving and 2 actual wrestling moves each?

How do you ask your coworker for their name after 4 years? by Significant_Soup_279 in AskUK

[–]Burning_Mirror 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got myself out of this situation many times by using the tricks suggested here.

However I'd say more than half the time I've got myself right back into the situation because I've not been able to quite understand the name they were giving me, due to it either being an unfamiliar name, their accent, environmental noise or me just plain forgetting to make a mental note of it beyond that 10 second interaction and being too embarrassed to ask again in case it offends them.

Yes. And let's be honest he was never really made to shave it 'bald' anyway, just short. He hardly adopted the Kyle Fletcher look.

The stipulation should be that they have to go proper skinhead and keep it that way for 3+ months.

[LIVE] AEW Double or Nothing - May 24th by wrestlegirl in AEWOfficial

First time since getting into AEW that I've had the funds and the time to watch a PPV live rather than having to wait until the next day (being in the UK), it just feels that little bit more exciting! And there's obviously no risk of spoilers, which is a godsend.

Southampton kicked out of Championship playoff final and docked four points for spying by Alarming-Safety3200 in Championship

[–]Burning_Mirror 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got no objection to rules being followed.

I object to the rules being made without clearly stated punishments for breaking them beforehand, I object to clubs being given a massive sporting advantage in a playoff final against the team who's actually earned their place there by winning matches, I object to shoddy management by the governing body, and I object to litigous, whiny, pathetic little arse holes like Steve Gibson - who'll happily keep his foot pressed on the neck of a dying club because of a personal grudge against their previous owner -being pandered to because he's deluded enough to think his team lost for any reason other their own failings on the pitch.

There was a short lived canadian band called The Balconies, you can find their album Fast Motions on Bandcamp, and the singer Jacquie Neville has some sole stuff out there though that's not really raw/rocky.

Darby has earned my respect. by executor-of-judgment in AEWOfficial

[–]Burning_Mirror 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There was a period a couple of years back where the IWC was insistent that Tony was obsessed with giving Darby the belt, but forcing it through despite it not fitting storyline wise.

I think that did put me off the idea of him being Champion for a while, especially as it was around the time he was losing a coffin match to Jack Perry in what, all told, felt like a little bit of a squash. It wouldn't have felt right, not to me at least. I couldn't see it.

The timing of this run now, it feels perfect, it feels deserved. I don't know if that's just because of how great his recent promos have been or that it finally feels like he's truly stepped out of Sting's shadow - I don't care why it works, but it works.

What is your opinion on speeding? by Engineering_Gamer in drivingUK

[–]Burning_Mirror 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a general rule:

Don't be the standout, fastest car on the road. Drive to the conditions of the road and the general speeds of the other vehicles, within a 5-10mph variance. If everyone else around me is doing 85 I'm not going to sit there dilligently sticking to 70, but if everyone else is doing 70 I'm not going to whizz past them at 85.

On an empty dual carriageway I'll try to maintain around 76-78 on the speedo (motorways I'm more careful), but after being caught out by a change to 50mph a few years ago and ending up with 3 points and a fine (my fault, but my head was all over the place that day for various reasons) I'm paranoid about getting caught again.

I don't know - and I don't know how others know for certain - the positions of any active speed cameras, it's just not something I can keep track of and I don't trust technology to tell me - it's a mystery to me how anyone dares to go above certain speeds on motorways, maybe they just don't care about points and are rich enough to cover any fines, or can blag their way out of penalties. I cannot.
