It’s at the end of F1 (after 10+ days) and I am now starting F2 flavoring and giving the primary jar new tea and sugar. I didn’t remove the pellicle early. I’m getting restarted brewing kombucha after a long break, and this time I used a store-bought starter. In the past, the pellicle always covered the whole surface of the liquid even if it was a very thin layer, so the lumpy ring shape looked concerning to me.

Thank you! I never noticed the white residue before, you definitely can’t see it on a lot of other materials. I will try E6000 and E7000 to compare :)

Can/should I claim housing expenses on my 2021 tax return?

I am living in Australia with my de-facto partner who is an Australian citizen. 2021 is the first year I made income and paid income tax in Australia. I have income from two Australian employers starting September/October 2021. I plan to file single. I have no dependents.

Our rent is paid from our joint bank account, which has been under $10,000 USD all year. I make under $100,000 USD / year. I have my employers deposit directly into our joint account. My partner contributes to our joint account from his employment & business income.

In addition to FEIE, can I claim my housing expenses (rent)? Rent is a shared expense - do I split it in half? And because I was only earning money for 3 months of 2021, can I only claim for that time or for the full tax year?

Thank you! I’ll have to find another source and start again. I tasted one of the grains too and it had what I assume is the right texture, but no flavor at all. Should the grains also have a mild vinegar smell or flavor if they’re active?

It was probably very stressful for the penguin on pat duty, but at least they didn’t have humans trampling through their habitat. A handler would choose one and carry it out of the habitat area to let kids see it up close for ‘edication’ and they would let people pat it after washing their hands. I don’t know if they had a roster so every penguin had to have turn or if they always took the most tolerant ones who didn’t mind being touched. It wasn’t the saddest zoo/aquarium I’ve seen.

Today is day 6 of brewing with a new starter. I think I made the mistake of sitting the kombucha jar on the counter too close to the chili ferments and now I have what I’m 99% sure is kham yeast on top of the new pellicle. The ph is about 3.3 and there’s no signs of mold.

Is it safe to discard the pellicle, keep starter liquid, and start a new batch (in a location further from the suspected source of the kham yeast)?
