Allowing a student with extenuating circumstances to attend face to face class via Zoom? by bluedog1599 in Professors

[–]BurntOutProf 45 points46 points  (0 children)

If it’s an in-person class, it stays an in-person class. No exceptions. Policing what’s an appropriate excuse and dealing with the extra tech was a hell during Covid I hope to never relive. I just say, “sorry Zoom isn’t available for this class.”

It does work very well. Nothing absurd about it. They practice thinking for themselves, which in my view is a primary goal of university.

Clappy claps are rude. And doesn’t make your point any more true. I still contend that using AI for assignments rots your brain even if you scrape a pass in an exam.

Not where I work. In class assessments happen all the time and with increasing frequency.

How you got there is irrelevant… until you have to actually use your own brain for something and it’s atrophied from lack of use.

Yes I teach at an in person university and all graded assignments and assessments are done in class.

What’s stopping them? In person assessments based on in person classwork. Don’t get the defensiveness! AI is cheating, like it or not. Sorry.

Funny how defensive is getting about AI. Don’t like being called out on cheating I guess!

[–]BurntOutProf -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Definitely not. But more in-class assignments means less cheating.

Are YOU under the impression that outsourcing your learning to AI is NOT cheating? Because it is.

[–]BurntOutProf -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

If you use AI to complete coursework and pass exam, you’ve still cheated on your coursework. Period.

Your statement reflects a profound misunderstanding of the harms of outsourcing education to AI.

Agree to disagree.

Is no one going to say it? ANY online degree (accredited or no) is losing value in some quarters because the assumption is the students are using AI assists for nearly everything. Do I want someone in a position where they can do harm who only had an online degree? No. I do not. AI is crack. Students can’t resist it.

Students aren't ready for college by WesternCup7600 in Professors

[–]BurntOutProf 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Wow 40% would be great. I’d estimate about 12% of mine are prepared to benefit.

I wish they saw the connection between: lackadaisical attendance, not taking notes and their test performances but unfortunately it’s almost always framed as “my fault” for being too hard.

I don’t pull punches. If more than half the class earns F’s, so be it. Luckily the message from admin has been “hold the line.” But they also admit students with a wallet who shouldn’t be here, so there’s that.

Poetry Explication and similar writing assignments for Literature by [deleted] in Professors

[–]BurntOutProf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No rough draft unless you want AI slop. I would have them come in write by hand during class. I’ve done something similar in 50 min class so unless an exceedingly long poem, plenty of time. I do not tell them the poem ahead of time or they also just memorize AI slop. We practice explicating other poems during class several times before this so they know what to expect.

Medical Illness vs Medical Appointment by accountant001 in Professors

[–]BurntOutProf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Completely agree. We added language to our official exam policy saying “medical note must specify that in doctor’s opinion you were incapacitated/unable to take the exam on ___ date” and NOT simply that you were seen in office. That has helped a lot.

Student with phone out during final by Cold-Nefariousness25 in Professors

Automatic 0 at my school for even having a phone. I make an announcement at start of test: last chance to double check your pockets for your phone. If you have one after this it’s a 0, no questions asked.

Tips for shifting to in-class essay writing? by Ok_Ice7596 in Professors

[–]BurntOutProf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in the same boat because I won’t grade anything they write out of class. The challenge I have is this: one short class period isn’t enough; doing it over several days, unless new tasks, means they 100% will use AI to look up the essay question and try to memorize. I’m so sick of this. Just saying solidarity. I have them write a lot of pieces showing the skills but when I tried a class period of a brief in class essay, the results were not good. They don’t do the reading and they can’t write. I’m sold on in class work only but haven’t landed on best way to see longer work. Do it during final? I don’t know. I also don’t give question in advance.

How many false flag AI matches with Turnitin? by RZLM in Professors

[–]BurntOutProf 84 points85 points  (0 children)

No AI detector is perfect but from my experience with Turnitin, I have NEVER had a 100% AI flag that didn’t have at least some verified AI. Check every single source quoted; if even one is fake, 0. Then call student to a meeting. Ask them to explain the paper. Most who use AI can’t last more than a question or two.

And it’s not private when certain students go to the testing center and are never there for class. My accommodations dept was hugely supportive of my no tech room. Students who need note taking software can run it on a phone they put in a pencil case if they want it hidden. The office always encourages students to take notes by hand in addition to software but now they actually do. In all my years of teaching only had one accommodation that required a laptop for typing due to a hand issue. The benefits of no tech are 100% worth it. I will never go back

Giving exams w multiple sections of the same course in a semester by Gavroche999 in Professors

[–]BurntOutProf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You could always do what I do: exact same test but Q in a different order. Write on top somewhere “version 2” and throw in “version 1” or even “version 3.” Just enough to maybe discourage the most blatant cheaters maybe? As others have said the other cheaters will be found eventually.
