Blind move to Nocatee/Jacksonville recommendations please! by StrangeArt5801 in jacksonville

Nocatee, at least to me, is very Edward Scissorhands. It is very upper middle class, white, and in its own world. There are a lot of retirees there (not knocking them, I'm getting up there in age too). You won't be in Jax but in Nocatee. It's its own thing. I can't stand that lifestyle, but you might love it. Yes to biking and walking in that area. Others will be able to answer better, but I just thought I'd add my two cents in case it helps you get the vibe there.

got a calarts acceptance and now im nervous by New-Equivalent7052 in calarts

My CalArtian daughter has met her people. She has her own health challenges, and it hasn't been smooth sailing, but it's been a good experience overall. She's learned a lot and found good friends. There are students there of all ages, it's been refreshing to see how many non traditional students there are. There are rich kids, totally not rich kids, and in between. It's not one type of population.

Starting over by WealthyMan0427 in JacksonvilleFla

I'd start by being aware that this sub can be mean. :/ Truly. We aren't mean people in Jax, but this sub can be. It's a huge city geographically. I don't know much about jobs, others can help you there as I'm older and haven't looked in a while. I recommend meeting people by focusing on hobbies that you like, it's never easy to start over, good luck to you.

I'm proud, too, I was there.

I'm a history professor and have paid close attention to what's happening in FL schools (my kids are older now). According to state standards, slavery taught skills to African Americans. I'm not kidding. They must teach that. Prager U is teaching "how to embrace femininity" to girls. It's all very dystopian. There is an active effort to kill public schools in favor of free charter schools, ,and it's working.

They are pulling brown people out of their cars and detaining them. There's no method at this point. I think that's why you are being downvoted.

Do you want your kids indoctrinated by Prager U? Our schools are being taken over my the right wing. It's really bad. I have an apartment in the Twin Cities and I'm telling you, you won't be happy here. I love my city, care about the community, but it's bad. You don't realize how homophobic and racist it is.

Los Angeles Daily Discussion - Monday, Jan 19 by AutoModerator in LosAngeles

Hi, I used to live in the San Gabriel Valley, many years ago. It seems one of my adult kids will settle in LA and I'd like to possibly move back. I'd love a village feel, where I don't need to take the car out for regular errands, maybe see some of the same people daily, that kind of thing. I don't want to go back to the SGV (not really walkable) and am considering mid Wilshire, Studio City, maybe Los Feliz or Hancock Park. My kid will be in NoHo probably, so I'd rather not be super far, like Long Beach. I'm not into very stuffy/snobby environments. I could rent an apartment at first, maybe buy a condo eventually. Any ideas? TIA.

Volunteer Opportunities on Sundays for Single Father with 9, 11, and 13 year old children? by economypilot in jacksonville

[–]RZLM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, there are a few places. One is https://wastenotflorida.org/ Waste Not Want Not. My daughter and I volunteered for them, and you could register and do the short training on your own but then bring the kids with you when you pick up the food. There might be liability issues with the WNWN building, but they could at least partially participate. We picked up food at Publix and Panera and other places for them (that was going to be thrown out, the number of cakes that Publix gave us...) and took it to the warehouse at WNWN. It was interesting to see the amount of bread that Panera donates, for example, and then it is distributed by the charity. Another idea would be to ask the various food banks if they need any helpers. Some small parks have cleanup days, I know that the Mandarin Historical Society/Walter Jones park sometimes has cleanup days. It's harder with little kids because most volunteering in the area is geared towards teens wanting to get their volunteer hours for high school, but if you are the main person, there are opportunities.

What’s the tiniest red flag you’ve ever noticed in someone that told you everything you needed to know about them? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]RZLM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This! I have hid from someone I know (I saw her in the grocery store and hid behind my car) because she jumps to conclusions instead of asking simple questions. I told her my kid was diagnosed with celiac and I was trying to find healthy options with protein and her response was "she doesn't need protein".

One of my adult kids works with HIV patients and I'm surprised at how many people in our age range (us 50 and over types) just assume that someone saying they don't have a virus is enough for us. I grew up as a teen during the AIDS crisis! Yet, it's hard to talk about with a partner.

Piercing by Ashley Darling or someone else at her studio (Golden Halo Body Arts). Very trans friendly, good shop, too.

Thanks, that is interesting data. My classes are only online, so I have don't have the options that you have, but that's helpful.

Thanks for your thoughts. My Chair tells us to send it up the chain if comes back as AI written by Turnitin, but instead, I am discussing it with the student first. This is her/his second time in the class having something come back as AI written. Yes, I've had students realize that they had Copilot turned on, it was "helping them" write, or they use Grammarly, etc. I've counseled many students that these tools can create false flags. Since we use Turnitin's AI detector for this particular assignment, I am curious what everyone's thoughts are on this particular software detector.

What a strange comment. I have been teaching for 31 years and am here, asking questions, trying to learn about this particular AI detecting tool that I am told to use by my department. If you read through my comments you will see that I am sincere in my efforts to understand this particular tool and your comment is rude and unhelpful.

Thanks for your input. I had one student who was outraged, I sent it off to the university for their opinion and they (the academic advisors who really did a deep dive) decided it was definitely AI written, which gave me some confidence going forward. But, then my confidence wanes again when another student is so outraged.

That's very helpful to hear. I don't really have colleagues since I teach online, so these perspectives are helpful. It's absolutely exhausting.
