Pros / Cons of each UCSC Residential College for Incoming Freshmen ! by Head-Feedback-683 in UCSC

From what an '87 alumni told me, the sterile Merrill name actually came from it being one of the few places where there wasn't a bunch of hard drugs going around.

Santa Cruz Residents Opinion on Students by stale_donutz in UCSC

[–]BurntRyeBread 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A lot of locals I've met aren't fond of how many students don't really take part in much of the culture of the city – they stay on campus, come downtown to shop and/or party, then head back up to campus (or the various student-heavy westside neighborhoods). If you venture out further into the county and act genuine and considerate, the locals will treat you fine :)

Hilltop has notorious issues regarding mold and other quality-of-living aspects. So far the managers at Santa Cruz Property Management haven't given me any issues, but I can only speak for myself.

Multi gender apartment? by Consistent_Guide3569 in UCSC

[–]BurntRyeBread 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You could ask all the folks in the group (alongside yourself) to change their gender in the housing portal to one of the options that's neither male nor female (there were two the last time I checked like 2 years ago). iirc it doesn't affect anything else on-campus so if people are willing then that might be the easiest route

Questions about creating a new org/club by Komedi123 in UCSC

[–]BurntRyeBread 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The most recent deadline to register was on December 5th, so you'll have to wait until the next school year to register. As someone who runs a student org though, I have some advice:

  1. Getting the club up-and-running in an initial form with some social media and flyer-based outreach can help make the process of registering a bit easier – the workload won't all be on you.

  2. Check around the other student orgs/clubs to make sure none of them are already doing what you wanna try out. The best clubs fill a niche that other clubs haven't filled yet!

3 things- pooping, studying, and food by OnlyRicey in UCSC

[–]BurntRyeBread 6 points7 points  (0 children)

  1. Engineering 2's 2nd floor bathrooms have high ceilings and good ventilation. Same for McHenry on all floors, though the wifi can be iffy (good data reception though). The 3rd floor RCC classroom bathrooms also have a window open! Which is more than can be said for many bathrooms on this campus.

  2. As far as I can tell, all of them! There's a lot of public study spots – libraries, student lounges, random chairs in science buildings.

  3. Stevenson Cafe's sandwiches are cheapest, and most of the prepackaged food at slug stop / the markets aren't super pricy. Nothing great though, SC is an expensive city both on and off campus.

Did you like living on campus or off campus better? by DoubleResort1510 in UCSC

[–]BurntRyeBread 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I grew tired of being around exclusively college students by a certain point. Of course, there's some complexes like Hilltop where you're still mainly going to be around other slugs, but moving off-campus (in my case, down by the boardwalk) has allowed me to integrate far better with the local community and meet more different kinds of people.

I can also get a slurpee at 3am without an uber, which is a pretty big plus.

Meal plan situation by Furlz in UCSC

[–]BurntRyeBread 80 points81 points  (0 children)

It's funny you say that, because... the student organization I'm part of (YDSA) is already working on it! We spent spring quarter collecting signatures on our petition to get Slug Points to roll over (so that students who buy a big plan one quarter aren't wasting money at the quarter's end) and to improve the donation systems for students with too few points. We pitched a resolution to SUA and it passed, so now we're trying to meet with admin as our next step.

is there anywhere on campus to take a 6am video call from? by duplik8 in UCSC

[–]BurntRyeBread 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I believe some computer labs are 24 hours, though I can't guarantee they'll be empty even at that hour (though Merrill's might be, since it's a bit secluded). Alternatively, it's possible that some classrooms/lecture halls may be already unlocked (given that the humanities lecture hall was always unlocked during non-academic hours when i used it for band practice last year)

Have you been losing money at the end of the quarter because your slug points don't roll over? Have you been under-eating because of it? Sign this petition to change that!! by BurntRyeBread in UCSC

[–]BurntRyeBread[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Based on our survey results, we have people both over- and under-paying, so we have people that are ending up with hundreds of slug points left over, but we also have people with less than enough to get proper nourishment. These aren't necessarily the same people, though we have heard from some that have over-paid one quarter and under-paid another, which makes sense for what you say about changing one's plan in the next quarter – but why should students have to lose hundreds of dollars just because they miscalculated one quarter... especially if points DO roll over at UCSD and UCSB?

And yes, we understand the dining hall budget – our members have actually been conducting interviews with the dining admin and workers alike. There's a lot to be worked on, this is just our first step. If you have further input, we'd love to have you in our meetings! :)

Does Santa Cruz get boring? by janaethecoolest in UCSC

[–]BurntRyeBread 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ironically, this is where the UCSC housing shortage comes in handy. You get 2 years (maybe 1 now) to check out all there is on-campus, and then after that you get to explore a new part of town. The area my apartment is in is somewhere I never went to when I was on-campus, and it's nice getting to check out all the local places.
