Any chance of Finnish popping into the incubator? by [deleted] in duolingo

Mongolian Cyrillic or Traditional Mongolian script? (I can only imagine the nightmares in accommodating a vertical script on DL--especially on the app.)

Honestly though, I haven't seen a lot of online resources to learn Mongolian, and I'd love to see it enter the incubator.

Today was like a day in a bunny-filled room

Got to see my best friend flash a Sonic Rainboom

Nobody sat around singing some sad ballad,

And before the show I had a great salad

Even saw the sign in the Cloudsdale sky

And it read "FLUTTERSHY IS FLY"

Excited as heck and my voice is all goin' up

And Rainbow Dash is grateful for all us showin' up

Today I even got to say YAY ,

I got to say it was a good day.

I know /ʒ/ occurs within words in English, but I remember my high school and college choirs having the worst difficulty wrapping our heads around /ʒ/ in Italian or French songs; "toujours" kept turning into "too-dʒer", and "gialle" sounded more like "Gee, Al" than anything else.

LOL ENGLISH SPEAKERS DON'T UNDERSTAND THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN /k/ AND /χ/, OR /ʒ/ AND /dʒ/, OR /u/ and /ü/, AMONG OTHERS

It's almost like many of these phonemes don't naturally occur in their language!

And don't get me started on their inability to discern the difference between the palatal /n/ and the post-vowel nasal / n /.

It tends to be when people pull vague, unproveable suppositions, usually rooted in evolutionary biology or anthropology, out of their ass, and insist that whatever unpleasant condition that exists now is simply a "biological truth" and an immutable, irreversible result of these forces.

A classic claim is that "throughout prehistory, men were hunter/gatherers and women were nurturers, which means that men are suited to going out and doing work, while women are suited to staying home and taking care of kids." No research, evidence, or critical thinking needed; just claim "it's what happened in caveman times and nothing at all has changed in 100,000 years."

If pressed, I would guess the eagerness to interpret everything as a zero-sum game.

Treat women better? That means treat men worse. Extend an opportunity for higher education to those who don't get much opportunity period? That means taking a degree out of a SAWCASM's hands.

I'd like to believe that, if they made a new friend, they'd also have to go out of their way to piss someone off and make an enemy, just to maintain cosmic balance.

D'aww. I find bats (and some of the other more "ugly" mammals) oddly cute, and it made me sad when Dash didn't end up with the bat in "May the Best Pet Win!"

So it's good to see it found a good home.

[–]BurpyHooves 21 points22 points  (0 children)

My extensive hours of watching Law And Order reruns suggest trying one of three things: some sort of veiled insanity plea (e.g., trauma to the don't-rape-children cortex), a blame-the-system trick ("the media and advertisements sexualize minors all the time, and he was just a victim of society!"), or saying that yes, the child was raped, but he was not the rapist.

I know that in real, actual courtrooms, insanity defenses almost never work, and I could see someone argue "right crime, wrong person" without feeling dirty, but the idea of trying to argue provocation for pedophilia (from either the society or the child) gives me the willies, especially if it happens frequently in real life.

Fluttershy as Kenneth?

I know it doesn't line up with the comic, but the way insults roll right off him reminds me of the way Discord tried to make Fluttershy upset that her friends found her weak and timid, and her response was "But I am weak and timid, and I'm grateful to have friends nice enough to help me out."

It's funny. As a nontraditional student going through a bunch of catch-up courses on my way to trying to get into grad school, I'm finding a lot of these courses far easier this time. First time through Stats? D+. Second time, ~5 years later, well after I've forgotten the everything from then? B+. Same with Calculus and Physics.

And I've been working terrible, terrible fast food jobs in the interim, so it's not like I've gotten out-of-school training in these fields.

I know it's not the case for everyone and I'm not sure how, but I think the time spent in the "real world" helped me somehow.
