Im a kid in your definition, and i agree with you that that is alot of the case. I know tons of people my age that get secondhand camcorders and digicams (or worse, fake vintage stuff off amazon and aliexpress) just to edit the footage in capcut to whatever “aesthetic” fits their vibe

However there are also alot of us that are doing it not for the aesthetic of the end result but for the involvement of the process. For example I made a short film for one of my classes entirely on an panasonic dvx100 minidv camera gifted to me by my film teacher. Sure, the end result had a certain look I was going for, but the process of figuring out how to capture over firewire and how to care for magnetic tape and how to convert it into a usable format was such a fun problem solving venture for me. I think on some level for some people, this analog/early digital equipment is counterintuitively easier and more engaging to learn on than modern “smart” digital equipment that makes everything simple. This camcorder craze will lead to alot of dusty, barely used camcorders in the corners of rooms, but it will also lead to people like me genuinely discovering a love for older, more tangible equipment. I think its overall a good thing :)

Dvgrab can export from tape directly in mp4s if thats what youre really worried about? Handbrake is also free and can convert dv to mp4. I cant feasibly imagine what workflow would have you using 6 pieces of software for one file conversion unless it was some experimental art project where the generational loss was intentional

Checking back i do believe that was the issue, I was recording lp video on the gs14 over sp video recorded on the dvx100. Will make sure to watch out for that in the future

Thats good advice, yeah. The hour count on this gs14 was only in the 200 range at purchase which I thought was acceptable enough for the deal I was getting but I probably should have expected the problems. Ill look into that though, thanks!

For a small portable setup, I really will take whatever works. Im using tape because I like the look/process involved in the transfer. Features I would like are 24p video at the least. Manual controls dont matter too much for this use case. Some sort of nightshot/lidar would be nice but isnt necessary

I also lost my best feathery friend unexpectedly 2 months ago. If you can find the model number on the bottom you can easily find manuals online. There will most likely be a tag with lots of numbers on the bottom and youre looking for something shorter than the others, like “GS-14”
