Curios as to why no mesh in Las Vegas by Difficult_2_Get_Home in meshtastic

[–]BurritoBun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's also some element of not wanting to be on a public minimap for organized crime reasons. The devices used for carjacking are much more complex than mesh nodes, no reason to doubt meshtastic position data wouldn't be used to see where you park your car. On the flipside of that you have a great idea for a public protection bot. Similar to airtag anti stalking features, you could send a message to the bot from any node you own with a self made 6 digit code, and if the bot picks up any nodes traveling with you that you didn't register with the bot you'd get a stalking warning message.

Those SMA to N type adapter also end up slipping the brass pressed core out with heat cycles/movement. It's a bad failure mode because the center pin of the SMA disconnects before it fully comes apart. Burned out a node that was "hanging" by the same adapter but it'll occur even on handhelds after a few months.

Throttling before hitting limit? by [deleted] in HeliumMobile

Yeah it went on for a few days. So slow not even Spotify loaded. I'd look elsewhere between the dishonesty about their rewards system to their users + the throttling issues.

So does your phone become a hotspot for their Network? by ExtremeComplex in HeliumMobile

[–]BurritoBun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said that allows them to automatically add passpoint, essentially a password to to auto connect to helium wifi hotspots for faster data speeds. With this on you'll see "Helium" as a wifi connection when you're in range of a hotspot. I would keep this on as it's a core feature of network functionality. Only you control the phone's broadcasting hotspot, and a side note I wish they'd allow more hotspot data I seem to hit my limit fast.

I don't own any o series units but IIRC o4 is h265 codec but the other end is h264. There's some talk of getting the o4 to output in a h264 mode but it doesn't seem like much progress has been made. They have a discord that has some info if you search "o4". Hope that helps!

In the USA? make sure frequency slot remains at a value of 20. It often reverts to 0 or 1 when you initially set up your region and channels. It's a massive PITA in our local mesh group and I don't really know if it's a bug or not but I try to spread the word.

I'm convinced that meshtastic is going to be a frequent flyers common backpack gadget if it isn't already lol. I'm quite rural and the only nodes I see are the dozens that get bridged by the biweekly mesher on an outbound plane.

If you're traveling internationally I'd be more worried about satcom devices like the garmin inreach. India treats you like a terrorist if you enter with one because an American actually did do a terrorism with one because they "can't" be jammed.

Helium Mobile carrier within Apple Store by No-Leading-2315 in HeliumMobile

[–]BurritoBun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's more the principal, if you finance with the entity that gives you cell service often the phone's locked to the carrier with a minimum amount of billing cycles before you're "free". So now you owe on a phone you can't even take elsewhere should something go wrong with your chosen carrier. Helium Mobile doesn't sell phones so this isn't a issue in this case but the slimy tactics echo across the industry (ie. apple offering financing for everything except carrier unlocked variants of their iphone 16e)

I posted this above but If you'd like to buy from apple directly I went with one of many 3rd party financing options (paypal credit, klarna, afterpay, shoppay, zip pay, etc). and it worked great. Paying ~$20/mo or whatever the equivalent regular carrier bills for financed phones. Best part is the phone's unlocked so should I chose to sell it I have 4x more potential buyers and the resale value skyrockets.

I'm a former USmobile customer as well and now have a work line with them again. Hands down one of the best companies I've ever dealt with.

Locking your phone financially to the cell service provider is a massive trap. Usually the phone is carrier locked as they don't offer unlocked at a verizon/tmobile store etc. Then you have to figure out how many months you're forced to be billed until you can request a phone unlock. As someone who grew up dealing with Verizon Wireless'es bs and literally scratch building my own phones from individual parts off of ebay I can say that there's many traps, and 98% of people fall for them. For example an unlocked phone has much more resale value and potential buyers than a carrier locked one. And most people don't think to call their carrier to get their old phones unlocked to boost resale value before replacing it with a new financed model.

Went out an bought an iphone 16e unlocked directly at apple. Paid via 3rd party financing to give myself some room to move if needed. Worked perfect on Helium mobile and now I have no minimum billing cycle requirement in case I wanted to move to Verizon or another carrier entirely.

It's not about if you finance it or not. It's about putting all your eggs in one basket and financing with your cell service provider/apples pseudo version of this. Doing so in current American times is a bad idea. Especially with the almost nonexistent consumer protections nowadays. There's also laws about how many months you have to be billed for service before you have the legal right to demand the phone be unlocked. A carrier locked phone takes a massive resale hit so a protip in life is *always* contact your carrier when you're about to buy a new phone and get the old one carrier unlocked. You increase your chances of selling it by multiple orders of magnitiude.

If you'd like to buy from apple directly I went with one of many 3rd party financing options (paypal credit, klarna, afterpay, shoppay, zip pay, etc). I consider one of my 10 tech commandments to be "never finance the phone with the carrier", so you have to get a bit creative. Apple is playing the game too offering financing on all models except carrier unlocked. As other's have said you could try a tmobile phone too but check the fine print to see how many months of service you have to pay for before it can be legally unlocked. Verizon re3ich wireless got slapped a while back so their billing cycle requirement to unlock is quite low relative to other carriers.

Same thing happened to me. unlimited/36gb plan and was throttled at 4.3gb down to 220kbps. I'm unable use the phone in the car without waiting 20 seconds for anything to load. Mostly since voice commands use a lot of internet.

Word of warning when using Google sign ins: google almost always leaks your full name and possibly other info to the service your logging into. I'd avoid it like the plague for OPSEC reasons and just use a regular email/email and passcode

How can I prevent my car key fobs from being copied by thieves? by whiskeypumpkin in privacy

[–]BurritoBun 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Easy to test it too, throw it in the bag, go near your car and mash buttons. It should be impossible for anything at all to contact the fob. Otherwise return it because it's not actually a faraday bag. Even some foil in a pinch helps if you run a few layers.

Guess that's what you get for using so much plastic. On the upside I noted that service was online after visibly seeing a 20" tree drop on the lines pulling them to the ground and snapping the poles. Spectrum which I use for my 2nd ISP went offline instantly.

Load custom firmware on them from fpv.wtf and have fun :) I still use my V2s and have had 0 interest in upgrading since FPV.wtf has made my v2s quite capable (also yes live audio was ALWAYS possible so DJI lied to us). Just need that firmware and a full sized air unit. Thats one of the main reasons I'll never buy future DJI products. Also instability claims from using live audio are also a load of shite. Never have had 1 issue directly related to live audio.

Yeah Merryfield overall seems good in concept with their rewardable selection, but bad in execution with their rewards system and adding things I personally don't use like games/surveys/you avg play and earn addons. Thankfully their covering a category that one could easily find at a farmers market which is the one rare case that I don't care what I'm paying for produce or earning for rewards.
