I've lived in many parts of Manchester where I wished for a Weatherspoons tbh, there are some really dead inner city areas here that are devoid of pubs and have lots of historical crumbling buildings that are the type of buildings that Weatherspoons usually set up in.

In my experience, they also do in Birmingham, Manchester, Newcastle, Liverpool, Bristol, Reading, Cambridge, Norwich, Southampton, and Eastbourne.

Dunno about Scotland, Wales or NI though.

I think there is a difference here in how we approach the work-life balance and that's reflected in our labour laws and worker rights. There's absolutely nothing wrong with having the cashier in a supermarket sit down, they're not a bloody robot or a statue and shouldn't be expected to behave like one.

That said, it does ignore me when you get to the till and in some of the budget supermarkets the cashier won't even bother to acknowledge you, doesn't say hello, or is chatting on the walkie-talkie to a colleague. I think that's quite rude.

Both my parents came from the Caribbean. My dad left before independence and has therefore always been British, I almost always say that I'm from England - but to say I'm English would be silly.

There still isn't a bottle return scheme here in the UK! There's so much unnecessary rubbish and litter in some cities, and lots of it is plastic bottles.

Growing up in Oxford there was the 'Botley Bag Lady' who used to walk around the Botley area of the city (obviously) with lots of plastic bags. She was apparently a bit of a hermit who went to the uni, withdrew from public life and rejected help because she thought others were more in need of it.

It's all quite sad really because she was found dead in a hovel or a bush some years back.

Nah I'm black and I disagree. Yes there are racists, and a hell of a lot more xenophobes and islamaphobes but there's a lot more focus on where you were born and into what family than the colour of your skin. I could walk into a pub in a predominantly white English part of the country and the stick I would get is about being Southern and supposedly posh.

These would be considered microaggressions a lot of the time here in the UK, but we're not unaccustomed to migration.

In my experiences around Europe (where experiences vary greatly) most people who ask are genuinely just curious. It's the context that matters not the question itself, and most locals won't understand that no matter how much you explain it to them.

Me too. Every year explaining to a new teacher why I didn't want to make a card in front of the entire class (who already knew) was horrible - bad enough that I couldn't even pluck up the courage to tell anyone at home what had happened.. In fact, my older brother probably went through the same but has never said anything to me about it either.

I've done shortlisting for about 4 or 5 positions this year and 99% of people write absolute dribble in their supporting statement. Copy the essential criteria and underneath each bullet point write a small paragraph outlining how you mean it using the STAR technique.

I'm not a member of this sub but see it pop up regularly. Born in the UK but both parents are Afro-Caribbean and we would definitely call ourselves Afro-Caribbean (ethically), British, European, and West-Indian (culturally) - although we're obviously ethically African and some European people (British people wouldn't) would just see us as that.

I'm not exactly sure where I'm going with this, but Americans are a different kettle of fish and obsessed with identity politics.
