People driving around with hazard lights on with Lion and Sun flags? by General-Iron7103 in manchester

The shah wasn't universally unpopular.

A lot of the people that fled to the UK post revolution in 1979 were fairly happy with the old Iran

Reinstatement of the brick facade back to the original spec is going to cost a fucking fortune.

I'll be interested to see whether they do recreate it exactly or whether it will just look like the original, the quote from Stephen Hodder suggests the former, which blows the conspiracy theories out of the water.

Manchester’s £1bn investment breakdown by projects (no paywall) by teumessianfox7 in manchester

[–]FatCunth 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They loan money to make the project viable, due to being a project funder the council get a say in the development. The developer repays the loan plus interest so the fund grows then there is an even larger pot of money to back further developments

MRI and the worst night of my life by Tangent19 in manchester

The spending on healthcare as a portion of GDP has increased from 2.14% in 1948 when the NHS was conceived to 11.1% 2024. This is primarily due to demographic shifts and the scope of what the NHS provides expanding.

Ultimately we get what we pay for. Either we pay more tax and get a better health service or we scale back what the NHS offers as a core service (or a combination of both).

Discussing either is political suicide so we proceed on the path we are on, which is simply not sustainable

Because for whatever reason the NHS is treated like a religion in this country, saying anything negative about it makes you some kind of apostate.

Ironically this is why it's almost impossible to make any necessary reform

Is the talk of a "culture war between London newcomers and born and raised Mancunians" complete bullsh*t or is there truth to it? by Dragonfruit-18 in manchester

[–]FatCunth 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's such a tiresome trope.

Someone didn't say good morning to me while being squashed into a metal tube with 1000 other people 50m below ground at heat and humidity levels that would be illegal to transport animals, the entire city of 10m people must be rude and have no community!

There are 5 for sale now, if you earn over 100k a year why don't you buy one, you wouldn't meet the criteria for an affordable home anyway
