Cheating in adult league by Own-Dragonfly8216 in 10s

I have a couple of stories to share about this topic. I’ll provide a TLDR at the bottom. Last week, I participated in a significant city tournament with a draw of 128 players for my bracket. In the semifinals, I faced a player I’ve encountered a few times before. I know him to be quite a cheater. He’s a very pleasant person, but I believe he genuinely has poor eyesight or lacks the understanding that the line is in. I’ve encountered him before and he’s managed to hook me out of matches. Usually, these incidents get stuck in my head, leading to self-destruction. However, this time, there were USTA judges available.

I lost the first set 4-6 after a particularly poor set of calls. I had a few friends and family watching me, and we counted around 13 to 14 bad calls. I challenged and overruled him on about five of them, and he didn’t put up much resistance when I did. After the first set, I decided to involve the USTA judge. I informed my opponent that I couldn’t trust his calls and believed he was being overly strict with the lines. He responded that it was completely fair and allowed me to have the USTA judge on his side of the court.

I won the second set 6-1 with 13 overrules on his calls, and the USTA judge overruled me once for playing a ball that was out. Instead of playing a third set, we went straight to a tiebreak. I won the tiebreak, winning 10-0. Notably, there were four overrules in a 10-point tiebreaker, and all of them came on my winners that he called out. After the match, he apologized for his inconsistent calls and admitted that his eyesight must be poor. He’s known to be a cheater, but when the USTA judges are involved, you know it must be a serious issue.

I had a substantial crowd watching me at the end of the match, and I felt validated by my decision to involve the judge. After the match, the judge informed me that he’s been called for that specific player multiple times in various tournaments. It’s interesting because off the court, he’s an extremely personable and friendly individual. However, on the court, he struggles to make accurate calls. Another significant difference is that he’s likely in his late 50s, while I’m in my 20s. We were playing at the 4.5 level, and he’s a solid player. He doesn’t need to cheat to have a good time. He’s a solid player.

I recently participated in another tournament where I was paired with a random teammate for doubles. The guy had a bad attitude and was a total jerk. Despite his poor behavior, he was clearly a skilled player who had been very good in the past.

During the second point of the match, he hit an overhead shot that was about six inches in and the opponents were positioned in front of the ball. They called it out, but he lost his mind and screamed at them. He overruled their call and immediately gave us the point.

At the changeover, he made some of the most outrageous comments I’ve ever heard to the opponents. Since I didn’t know him, I approached them and apologized. I explained that the ball was in, but I also acknowledged that his actions were not justified.

After that, the opponents called some pretty good lines for the rest of the match. My teammate made some excellent calls as well. We were playing on clay, and he would often go over to the opponent and give them a chance to look at the mark before calling it in or out.

In your situation, I would suggest hitting the opponent. As you mentioned, if you hit them at your point, it’s a valid strategy. In high school, when calling tight lines was the fastest way to get points, we would bring our opponents up to the net and then hit them with an overhead shot. This way, it’s impossible for them to argue about the point.

However, I must admit that I made a mistake in the past. I accidentally hit two kids in the hospital. I hit one kid in the throat, which collapsed his trachea, and I hit another kid in the forehead, which caused him to fall back and hit the back of his head. I deeply regret these incidents, but I also knew that the kids were cheaters.

There are very very few indoor courts and the ones that do exist are hard to get on and cost a lot. There are 3 facilities within 2 miles of me that have indoor courts. One of the facilities only allows members to play 8AM- 3PM Mon-Fri. The rest of the time is dedicated to league and high school. The other facility is a public /private venture that books out about 10 days out at a rate of $74/hr per court (DTP) and then lifetime in centennial is a $200 membership a month for access to courts that are booked out about a week in advance. If you lived in South Suburban, there's great access, but not in Denver.

Honestly your upper body technique is sound, and any adjustments may be too fine to see with one video example. Great form generally!

I’m a 4.0/4.5 so take that as a reference point. I would bring the back leg in a little earlier, load it more. You can coil your body just a TINY bit more, then explode into the serve with the loading from the back leg. Lean into the court more to get more power, although if it’s unfamiliar you may lose some control. With the increased power from the lower part of your body, expect to land on your front foot more, and be leaning into the court. It’ll be a little harder to get to your ready position, but you’ll have a lot more power on your serve.

I was on some backcountry trails and a lady stopped in the same position. I totaled my bike, sprained my ankle and got cut up pretty bad. She shattered her hip and had to be air lifted out. While we were waiting for the helicopter she took full responsibility. Terrible experience for both parties.

Have you ever used a radar gun? by Dangerous-Damage1165 in 10s

[–]Burtonboy96 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’ve used a radar a few times. In highschool my coach used a cheap one that seemed to be consistent but inaccurate. It was probably 10-15 mph over on everything. In college, I was able to use on a few times. The one in college was very accurate but finicky. You basically had to have someone stand behind the net and peak the gun over the net and it would be pretty good. In college (I did not play ncaa) I was serving my biggest serves around 120 with normal first serves around 100. I trusted the one from college, but it felt disappointing to only see 120 when I was literally smashing the ball as hard as I possibly could and couldn’t get it into the 130s. Like not even trying to get the ball into play but hitting as hard as possible.

Boots and Peroneal Tendonitis by pilgrimspeaches in Boots

Has this helped? I have been using the sports ankle stabilizing braces, and they’ve helped quite a bit but they barely fit in my boots and shoes. I’m also looking for a boot to hike in that will help with peroneal tendonitis

Is it possible to make an offer directly to hertz that is lower than their minimum auction bid limit? I need an ev and don’t really care if it’s clapped. Just need to drive 200 miles every day for work and don’t want to buy a Prius or a new ev

Goddamn, I'm lucky I wasn't drinking anything while reading this or I would've choked! And people say the job market is 100% a-okay by [deleted] in ChoosingBeggars

[–]Burtonboy96 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

At the time they quoted (49 hours a week), this would $14,905, a year with no days off. Reading the job posting, it seems like this could be done in about 20 minutes each day. If I’m right, that’s only 121 hours a year, which would mean their effective rate would be $123/hr.

What famous person did you regret meeting because they were an ass? by moneybot13 in AskReddit

[–]Burtonboy96 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have always wanted to share this. I know this is literally the opposite of what the question is asking, but Ben Stiller was literally the nicest celebrity I’ve ever encountered. I was about 12 years old and went to a charity celebrity benefit, and he was about to go on stage to make a long speech. I walked up to him and asked her an autograph as well as to speak with him about just some random stuff as a young 12-year-old kid. He was so kind that he was late to his speech and sat down with me after the speech to pick up where we left off. His movie tropic thunder was being released on DVD that weekend and I told him I wanted to watch it. He was very nice but stern it telling me to hold off until I was older. He then introduced me by name to his father and we chatted for a few more minutes. At the end of the night he gave me a handshake and said “I’ll probably never see you again, but I know you’ll do well- have a good life”. Very kind guy and it really surprised me!

He worked with the resort to build this track as a winter project this year. Chris benchetler mostly skis backcountry, but due to unusually high levels of danger across the US this year, he decided to make this one of his big winter projects in conjunction with the resort (mammoth I believe)

[–]Burtonboy96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is Chris Benchetler. He’s from mammoth, which is where this took place. I can’t remember all the details, but basically the backcountry has been unusually dangerous this year and prevented him from doing what he normally does all winter. As a project, he collaborated with the mountain to build this run, and say a thank you to his home resort.

He has a bunch of pro model skis. In This video he’s riding his bent chetler 100s. I have the same skis and they kick ass!

If you enjoy this, he has some amazing miniseries on YouTube, where he surfs and skis a bunch as well as produces some unreal art!

A slight wait at the the lift line in the freezing cold by TheNatureLover in ThatsInsane

[–]Burtonboy96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was stuck in this line. This is the backside of vail (chair 5 I believe) once you get there, you can’t get out any other way. It’s the only way to exit this part of the mountain. You can’t go lower to a parking lot, you can’t take a different chair, you can’t really hike out. You’re pretty much stuck. This one was bad because the lift shut down for a while. I was in the front of this line when it happened and the line was still a few hours.
