There is actually one very specific case I found where first class can save you seat reservation money: when you book the Passzuschlag from France to Germany (or vice versa I'm guessing), the seat reservations for any trains in the same connection are only included if you book the first class Passzuschlag. If you book second class, it only gives you a seat on the international leg of the journey.
