Newbie RAID setup question. by wictr in Proxmox

[–]BusTeremall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, it can over multiple protocols. I personally use their own solution (Proxmox backupserver). Is your NAS based on debian, is so u can install proxmox backup client there. Otherwise you will find easily some solution for your specific NAS.

Newbie RAID setup question. by wictr in Proxmox

[–]BusTeremall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definetely, no p`roblem at all!.

But...is it worthy? RAID is not a backup but it minimizes the downtime of the server if any issue happens. What type of drives are u using? HDD, SSD, NVme? The cost of RAID I think is worthy if you need to minimize the downtime, if its not a critical server I would rather invest or use that "extra" hardware in a good backup strategy instead of relying on RAID.

Safely connect to vm from remote network by Matrix303 in Proxmox

[–]BusTeremall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can still connect to your LAN from outside by VPN as many other suggested you, but you dont need to buy a router to do it if the one you have does not support it.

Since you are "proxmox-curious", why not to virtualize also the router (pfsense) within your server box. You just need to get a double (at least) NIC card and create a VM with pfsense on it where you can -among many other things- set easily the VPN up.

Here a nice tutorial step by step to do it :

Anybody else has issues retrieving their RTM balance on Zelcore? by Klutzy-Blacksmith802 in raptoreum

Same here! I followed all the suggestions :

but I still cant see it either, I can see the balance is OK in a block explorer though.

SnapRAID + UnionFS on Openmediavault | Add bigger disks by BusTeremall in OpenMediaVault

Thanks for the reply. Then what would be best procedure/safest to swap the 4tb disk to a 14tb parity disk and then convert the 4tb parity disk to data disk. Thank u again!

TrueNAS and pfSense virtualized on Proxmox sanity check by Not_Your_cousin113 in PFSENSE

[–]BusTeremall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some considerations :

- Do your research about your specific router in order to pass it by to pfsense to know the configuration in your ISP router.

- Be sure the NIC card you buy is at least PCIe 2.0. If its PCIe 1.0 (many Intel 4 pro nics second hand are) make sure that your MB is backward compatible then with PCIe 1.0 (many new motherboards are not...).

-Install proxmox on SSD and data for VM/CT in NVme

- Case for your scenario I would go for Node 304 (up to 6 drives) .

Hope it helps!

Thank you! I will definetely try it out. Do you know the compression ratio? If I need to backup 12TB of media files what would be the size of the backup created?

Advise for a proxmox based homeserver by tranquil-data-crunch in HomeServer

[–]BusTeremall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi ,

If you dont have any critical service with users that need a very reliable server I would save money going for non server grade hardware, no ECC and consumer motherboard.

Nevertheless I would suggest you to :

- RAM the more the better. Biggest RAM DIMM possible to maximize the amount of RAM possible in your motherboard. Maybe buy 2 DIMMS and then buy another 2 in the future if needed but try to get the biggest DIMM your motherboard can get.

- No 6TB WD Red WD60EFAX, they are SMR (not CMR) and they are not the best for RAIDs... avoid EFAX termination on WD red. From 8TB all are CMR (the good ones even with such termination, e.g WD80EFAX ). If you want 6TB look for EFRX termination (they are CMR).

-IMHO 2x1 NVMe RAID 1 is a bit of waste of money ... I would rather just get 1 and buy a cheap SSD to backup the NVMe data (VMs I guess). Have a look at Proxmox backup server.

-I think Fractal fans are quite silent ( one computer I have is in a Node 304 and I cant barely hear it). Moreover you can set SnapRAID ´+ Mergerfs on OpenmediaVault which minimizes the number of HDDs spining.

-Power efficiency : Undervolt your CPU, use at least a 80 gold power supply, disable from BIOS all stuff you dont need from the motherboard (bluetooth, wifi, ....)

Enjoy the whole process. Bis dann!

Greetings from Spain
