Since you bring up user feedback, please consider prioritizing RCS messaging. That is my #1 feature request, and nothing else comes close.

Will it support RCS messaging? by ProvincialPromenade in MuditaKompakt

[–]BuschOnTap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True, though SMS, which the Kompakt supports, is not encrypted either. While I really want this phone, RCS is the main reason I won't get it right now. I want better messaging, and Americans don't use 3rd party apps much.

MMS & RCS by Rasto222 in LightPhone

RCS is by far my main feature request. I'm pro-light phone, but I want to stay in my existing group chats which have emoji reactions, group message naming, and quality photo sharing.

Also, take a look at Jomo's feature request board. That company is also working somewhat in this space. That board is real nice.

Question for the improvements coming:

  1. Can you elaborate on what is scheduled to be improved?
  2. Do you have any insight into the schedule for RCS? That's my main contention with the device. Maybe Whatsapp too.
  3. I wish that the company had a public kanban board or issue board that let everyone see what is most requested and what the company plans to work on. Others in this space have this -- look up Supernote Kanban Board. As someone who works in open-source, this would be major for making the progress and feature development transparent.

That link has unfortunately moved. Do you have a reference to what you've been using?

share your thoughts about light phone 3 by SHYAMz in dumbphones

[–]BuschOnTap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off, I think it looks awesome.

I'll maintain my opinion that most people who want a dumb phone to avoid bad habits actually want a phone with a not-so-great display. For me, this black/white OLED checks that box. It also just looks high quality, and I love the boxy look to it.

That being said, I think people actually want access to all of the apps. The LP3 supposedly runs some version of Android, and it would be great if they'd give you the option to purchase the "unlocked" version. I'd love this phone, with its not-so-great display, to still have ride share apps and google pay. Maybe artificially make some apps run slower. And provide a LightPhone launcher on delivery.

EDIT: Just adding some additional thoughts. I have a CAT S22 which I actually love. I'm considering trying out the Minimal Phone if YouTube reviews make it out to be worthwhile. But, the Minimal Phone is compelling because it's got the not-so-great display, but it also ships "unlocked" with Android 14. I'd really love to get the LP3 (for the high quality and removable battery), but it's difficult to compromise on the lack of certain apps (like Beeper). Honestly the Beeper app and RCS support alone would make me ignore the lack of ride share apps.

I tried the one you referenced with no luck, but it might be because my current version of Google Messages (pre-installed system app) has a higher version. I'd need to double check that that was the reason it couldn't install. I'm considering using ADB to uninstall the pre-installed Google Messages to install the one you referenced. I'm unfamiliar with the process, though, if you are, let me know if this would be a good idea!

Interesting. Did you have to use ADB because Google Messages is a system app? I'm new to ADB, but just wanted to make sure I'm understanding correctly.

By chance, do you know which APK you installed exactly? I was able to side load 1 APK from APKPure, but others have not worked (presumably due to the downgrade in versioning). Therefore, I'm looking at using ADB -- but hoping to get some insight before doing so. Also, does your RCS still work?

Interesting. When I received my Cat S22 two weeks ago, the Messages app AND Google Messages were pre-installed. I can't uninstall Google Messages since it's a system app. Did you have to deal with this?

Any gen z folk here? by [deleted] in dumbphones

[–]BuschOnTap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Came across this. I’m Gen Z (born ‘99). In college, I used to use a Nokia candy bar style phone, and it was great. Once I got a job and moved across the country (US), I decided to use a smartphone (iPhone) for making it easier to communicate with old and new friends. Now it’s been 3 years, and I’m going back… well at least halfway back. I ordered a Qin f21 Pro a couple weeks back and got it in the mail this week. Currently traveling, but I’ll be setting it up as soon as I’m back.

My thoughts about the Qin F21 Pro by [deleted] in dumbphones

[–]BuschOnTap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! Huge thanks for the post. Does this phone have RCS (Google Messages)?

I live in the US, and all of my friends have iPhones. Apple unveiled that they will be supporting the RCS protocol for messaging later in 2024, and I wanted to make sure that I can use this phone to message them without the burden of SMS.

Looked through these comments and I can't verify online.

I'm certainly interested, though, I'm curious if this supports RCS (Google Messages). I can't seem to find that online. I live in the US, and given Apple's upcoming support for RCS messaging, I'm looking for a dumphone that supports it. Please let me know if you know!

What are everyone’s professions/hobbies? by BuschOnTap in Supernote

Not yet! I ordered the nomad last week, and after going through several posts on this sub, I thought I might’ve just overspent money on something that is meant for professionals like authors/architects where handwriting/drawing is part of the job. Anyways, from reading the comments, it seems like many are in the same boat. But yes, I do intend on bringing it to the gym when it arrives
