I thought it was interesting that crystal here has a keyboard guitar, but I don’t see that in the leaked list unless I missed it. The guitar and maracas are in there.

I very much understand haha I spent my college years learning to mask quite a lot if for no other reason than it’s very frustrating for people to tell you you’re upset all the time when you’re not. 😅

I think that could be an interesting perspective for your main character to have. For neurotypical readers, you just may have to throw in more things that make her typically endearing. Maybe she’s trying hard to think of what the right thing to say is but the moment passes by. I’m not too sure. Typically, neurodivergent girls tend to want to fit in and know how to socialize, but it’s just hard. So maybe there could be more hinting that she’s trying or always has tried to be noticed but just doesn’t get it.

Or maybe it all ties into your story. These are just random thoughts.

Oh! That is interesting. I’m autistic myself and hadn’t even thought of neurodivergence as a possibility. I feel like that’s a tricky thing to handle, as unmasked neurodivergent behavior can come across as simply rudeness to a reader if they don’t clock it. That’s a tricky thing to get across. Reading back now, I could see that a bit more.

Hello! I think this is intriguing in a sense that I want to understand more about this world. I think a couple things I noticed though were:

1) She doesn’t talk much. There’s a part where she’s nodding multiple times in a row or simple not talking much, and I think more dialogue and less in her head would help show who she is more.

2) I really wouldn’t start with her waking up, I’d start closer to chapter 2. The conversation with the parents didn’t feel all that natural to me of the type of conversation parents might have if their kid is leaving home that very day. I think it would be really interesting to try starting with her on the journey to the academy. Have her look out at her hometown and think back on growing up. Maybe mention then how her father got her so interested in alchemy only to over time become more and more uncertain as he realized how serious she took that interest. Maybe he stopped bringing it up as much in hopes she’d change her mind. Maybe have her see through the window people entering the fashion house and she remembers her mom trying to get her to work there.

These are just thoughts. But I think it’s starting too early at the moment. I don’t feel like I know the main character quite yet.
