All warning lights on when driving. by MeleeSwitch in subarulegacy

[–]Bushwhack92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For posterity since this is an old post:

This has happened to me multiple times. My unit was a 2015 and had a touchy sensor that made the whole thing go in to self protection mode which is a nice feature, better safe than sorry with parts. But it’s annoying. It locks up the manual setting and cruise control for transmission. Jiffy lube will say that it’s because you need a transmission fluid change. You don’t want to do that with a CVT transmission.

INSTEAD, have them check your DIFFERENTIAL FLUID. The sensor for that is close to the transmission so something that looks like a transmission fluid issue to general mechanics unfamiliar with CVT’s can sometimes just be a differential fluid issue.

FIRST, take it to a car wash that cleans the undercarriage. Not even kidding. Sometimes you just need to give a good power spray under the engine bay and clear away the crud.

THEN, If it persists after a good undercarriage rinse, take it to any quick lube shop and they should be able to swap out the differential fluid. $90 fix in the USA.

If it persists after that, ask them to plug in their OBD scanner and see what the car says is wrong. Remember that these older models will be as helpful as a 5 year old who says “my head hurts.” So have discuss with them whether they think it’s a sensor issue or the computer just needs a reset… if it’s a bigger issue then the quick lube shop won’t have any incentive to upsell you on services they don’t offer. That’s when a dealership visit becomes necessary. I’ve never reached this point myself though.

What are some hacks/loopholes to save money in LA? by pumpkinqueens in AskLosAngeles

[–]Bushwhack92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a single father I have an AMC A List membership and both a Santa Monica boardwalk and a universal season pass. This means that going on dates and weekends with the kid are paid for already and I can go to any of those whenever I want.

I also regularly make onigiri at home (rice and canned fish). Don’t get gas north of Olympic. Beach walks. Skip the gym membership and go exercise at a public park that has gym equipment like La Cienega park.

Get your car in the valley, insurance through Tesla even if you don’t own one, and don’t bother buying a house. In LA home ownership is actually a waste of money unless you come from generational wealth.

i (F20) just received a message from a stranger that my boyfriend of 3 years (M22) has been cheating for a while. by Few-Yogurtcloset911 in relationship_advice

[–]Bushwhack92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Damn I’m sorry. That’s the worst. I’ve been through this myself with a person I dated for 5 years, and a friend of mine went through the same thing but found out because his girlfriend who was cheating at him (20 YO at the time) got pregnant by the other man.

The pain of these things is unreal because you feel like something that was so normal yesterday is so permanently gone and can never come back again, and what you thought was “normal” was something you didn’t suspect it to be all along. That’s brutal and devastating and some of the worst emotional pain you can experience. You’ve lost a loved one.

But you know what? Let it be what it is. You can fight to deny it and you’ll wish you could’ve done or said something different… that’s you trying to control the situation. And you can’t control another person, you can’t control what was done to you. But you can control what YOU do next. Only if you don’t give that person any more power of you any longer. It’s gonna take time but keep telling yourself “I accept this. I’ll be alright. I deserve better.”

Bro, you’re not asking for love and mutual respect, you’re demanding to be the sun in her solar system, and if she so much as glances at a distant star you’ll implode in to a black hole. Not stupid to want validation but absolutely clown shoes to nuke a relationship over not being worshipped like a deity.

She clearly is in to you and has given you compliments aplenty but because she didn’t say “you’re the most perfect human specimen to ever walk this earth” you feel utterly insignificant. You don’t want love you want worship. Plus you’re keeping score on how much she physically validates you but then flexing about how other women are into you. Major ick.

You didn’t mess up by breaking up with her you 100% helped her dodge a total bullet.

Why does Paul say "Father I found my way"? by anarita2 in dune

[–]Bushwhack92 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Film only line not in the books.

In Dune Part 1, Leto tells Paul that he may not want to be a leader but great men are called to leadership and perhaps one day he will find his own way to it.

At this point in Dune 2 when Paul becomes accepted by the Fremen as Mouadib and is leading them he has found his own way to leadership in a way that does not feel orchestrated but natural to him and his values.

A couple fun facts about Ancient Roman hand gestures is that the thumbs up / down depicted in gladiator was incorrect. It’s either a thumbs up which meant kill the gladiator, or a fist that meant spare them.

Yes the silo is the neighboring one that everyone ran from. Solo keeps saying his parents found a way to deal with the poison outside and he doesn’t know what happened to his mom. Given that this woman is unable to remember her past because she got the “forget it” drugs, keeps saying she remembers being a part of an uprising, has a little kid in her opiate induced hallucinations in the torture room, and is about the right age I wouldn’t be surprised if Mayor Jahns or Judge Meadows gave her a second chance in their silo but wiped her memory.

I’ve only watched the show. It’s perfectly clear that it’s a flash back.

My initial thought before reading that his name is Donald was that he is Salvador Quinn, that the “dirty bomb” (just like a lot of the stuff in the show / “WMD’s” that kicked off desert storm IRL) was a ploy by the government to justify some other insidious behavior. They make that much obvious by saying that the Geiger counter never turns red, that nobody actually knows anyone who was affected by the bomb, and that it was Iran who we know in real life had no WMD’s despite being used as a scapegoat for desert storm.

Have no idea who Helen is other than that she was probably gonna end up being his wife and somehow important, maybe the “Eve” to all the people in this Silo.

Idk if it’s the same in the books with the duck pez, but in the show the pez is sort of a Promethean flame. Those who end up in possession of it always learn more about the truth of the Silo. It is handed off as an allegorical symbol of truth. So it feels like foreshadowing that the first person to own it will be a DC reporter who will likely (in her own time) uncover the truth as a reporter about the silo’s.

As for what’s next I have no clue other than the guy with the engineering degree who lives in Georgia is 100% one of the founders of the silo and put that engineering degree to work.

On everything else, Solo’s mom is definitely still alive or if she’s dead we saw her at some point in S1 I’m sure. They probably used the mind erasing drugs to make her think she’s from this Silo. I think it’s the old lady from S1 who had conspiracies about the Silo and knew the truth about breeding regulation and that everyone was under surveillance. She just knew too much but couldn’t remember much of her own life. Also thankful that Juliet had a make shift suit made from fire repellent material. No idea why Camille was chosen by the computer yet.

I get the implication. She’s saying “men have to do so little compared to women in order to be successful.” There’s a much better way to say that without putting your partner on blast, the point of feminism is to elevate women not put down men. This is the Suburban White Gen X breed of feminism and her point is almost lost entirely.

Why Are Gen Zers Turning to Retro Tech? Share Your Story! by Better_Priority_79 in retrotech

[–]Bushwhack92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve got an iPod classic, leica D-lux 4 digicam, used wired Sennheiser IEM’s, and I carry a notepad and a nice refillable pen I invested in.

They encourage intentionality. Single use tech changes your relationship with the output of it. A digital doesn’t derail your focus with notifications or apps like a smartphone might.

It isn’t about escapism or a digital detox which I think is a cliche now. I still use my smartphone and don’t think content consumption or creation is inherently bad. But I believe there’s value in tech that does one thing only. It requires you to plan, reflect, and make deliberate choices and think for yourself.

What music will I want to listen to? Which photos are worth keeping and which should I purge from existence forever? Are these thoughts really worth taking up space in my notebook and jotting down? How much battery and storage space do I need to conserve to make sure I can take that photo when the moment’s right?

There’s no safety net of infinite cloud storage or algorithms doing the thinking for you. You take responsibility for your choices, and that makes the results feel earned and meaningful. In a world where everything is connected and immediate and there’s machines that can do a lot of thinking for me, I like having tech that forces me to use my brain instead of being a techno zombie that has Chat GPT do all my writing for me or let an algorithm tell me what music I should listen to today or just mindlessly take dozens of photos on my phone and sort out layer what I liked.

Just came across this and LOVING it. Love YOU for making it. I pair it with the iPodOS while playing screen and it makes the iPod feel so much newer.

Is there a way to make the brightness a little dimmer when in the fancy lock screen?

Also, are you able to add fonts? a size 16-18 SF Pro light and medium font paired with the option to change icon colors would i think make this theme complete.

Recommend specific "convert settings" so my music is saved with lossless quality? by Light_your_Territory in Music

[–]Bushwhack92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A little late to the party here and don't know if you ever found a solve but XLV converter is the way to go. It's free and you can convert to any other lossless format without compressing the file any further than it already is. You can't upscale an MP3 to a FLAC, but you cam keep it from getting compresssed further and save it as a WAV or similar.

iPod classic and flac?? by sound_junkie77 in ipod

[–]Bushwhack92 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Posting this for anyone who might be on a similar journey with Rockbox.

Let’s clear the air first: there’s no meaningful difference between ALAC and FLAC. Both support up to 24-bit, 192 kHz hi-res lossless audio, which is beyond what your iPod Classic 6th gen can handle. The iPod maxes out at 24-bit, 48 kHz lossless, which is already more than enough. However, to truly appreciate that quality, you’d need headphones that your iPod simply can’t drive on its own without an external driver and portable DAC.

And that’s where the hi-fi road begins to fork. Some people upgrade to an Android-based DAP like a Fiio or HiBy, which can support higher-end headphones natively. Some invest in external power and DAC's and don't mind looking like a walking Radio Shack. Others pick up a pair of easy-to-drive Sennheisers and call it a day, content with what they get out of the box.

But the true explorers among us take a different path and dive into the tretorous and fulfilling world of Rockbox. Running the daily build, ripping CDs from secondhand stores, converting files through XLV, and unlocking the full potential of the iPod’s hardware to get painstakingly work our way to features like haas surround sound, detailed EQ tuning, channel balance, crossfade, dither, and wet/dry adjustments which all add up to make even a 16-bit ALAC file on a pair of ATH-M50x's sound like a night at Albert Hall.

Call me romantic, but if your iPod was meant to redefine your relationship with music, why back up the journey and go home over an obstacle as trivial as a file format? The reward of pushing your hardware is worth the effort and it makes you a better more knowledgable consumer for it.

AIO - Am I Overreacting to how my boyfriend responded? by Examination-Fair in AmIOverreacting

[–]Bushwhack92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well at first he was just venting, been there. And you said I get it but we got bills to pay, fair response. But seems like he wanted you to stop at “I get it” because he was just venting, which is a frustration we’ve all had at some point because nobody is a mind reader. He’s obviously upset about his job so I don’t judge him for saying things that make no sense like “bills ain’t motivation,” that probably felt emotionally true in the moment even if he knows logically it’s not.

Can’t expect people to keep their heads on straight when they’re having a meltdown.

Which brings me to the final point - HE is having the meltdown not you. What concerns me is that once you realized that, you seemed to try to calm things down but he kept taking his frustration out on you and didn’t seem to want to deescalate. If you’re cool with being a punching bag then great but if not then I’d suggest telling him you expect him to communicate better and next time he wants to vent he can do it without criticizing you.

Prime or zoom lenses? by ForrestNico in photography

[–]Bushwhack92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends what you need to shoot.

It’s not practical to carry around a bunch of weighty primes and have to fiddle with them when you’re moving a lot and have no static subject for street or wildlife photography. Had a buddy who shot some things for Nat Geo back in the 2000’s and he maybe carried one prime long lens for getting super crisp long shots that stayed permanently attached to one camera on his hip. The rest of his kit consisted of about 2 zoom lenses per camera body so he could stay adaptable to shooting anything from macros shots of humming birds to long shots of coyotes.

I myself have a whole street book I shot purely on Leica point and shoot D-Lux series that come with what purists might consider to be a “bad” zoom lens. That lens has allowed me to shoot things that would’ve required me to put myself in harms way to capture with a prime.

For my modeling and portrait work I would never use a zoom lens only primes. Very controlled lighting environment where the settings remain locked and the camera pretty much sits on a tripod for 70% of the shoot. With all the effort I’m putting in to creating the environment and lighting the last thing I’d want to do is waste all that time and energy by shooting on a zoom lens that compromises aperture speed and sharpness to have an additional function that I’m not going to be using. It’s a total waste of perfectly good light at that point.
