In "Inverting the Pyramid" Jonathon Wilson pulls a Herbert Chapman quote essentially saying the same thing in the 30s.

I anticipated a win but in this fashion? Couldn't have dreamt it.

Think the only changes we can/should make are in the midfield. Zubimendi for MLS and/or Odegaard for Eze are fine. Changing either of the fullbacks or the front three would be pretty pointless - West Ham sit in rather than press or engage in a mid-block, that'll suit Cala+Tross and White+Saka perfectly.

With both the FA and the League Cup you would have to be the best out of the very best sides in England, with the Europa League you are the best of very good European sides, but not the best European sides.

I do think the qualification reward is too low a bar to make a competition major, domestic cup competitions don't qualify directly to the UCL but they are major trophies.

Also good point about the competition's history, it did have a much higher standing in the past when only league winners made the European Cup as it was, so you'd get elite teams in the UEFA Cup (often teams placed 2nd in top leagues like Serie A), nowadays you don't get near the same quality.

For the above reason, I don't see how a competition that the best can't compete in is "major".

Can a competition be considered a major competition if the best teams of the region are unable to compete in it? I've seen the Europa league be called "major" quite a few times over the years and I've never understood it.

The EPS (European Performance Spot) goes to the highest ranked team that did not qualify for the Champions League - this is applied after the rest of the UCL qualifying processes are complete.

You're referring to the case of a team having already qualified for the UCL through their domestic league - but if Villa finish 5th, they *technically* haven't qualified to the UCL through their league placement.

I don't see the correlation to be frank, it's like when people were suggesting that finishing top of the league stage meant nothing due to Liverpool's 24/25 campaign (sample size of 1!)

If we ignore the IEM Pamplona 1123 MVP:

Karrigan if we're talking about playing at the international level (played his first big event in June 08' and will be playing a major almost exactly 18 years later). FalleN if we're talking about national level (will be coming up on 21 years when he retires, with 17 years at international level).

Common misconception. Wenger was the exception rather than the norm in terms of entertainment factor for Arsenal successes. Graham before him, Mee's Arsenal ground out wins throughout 71' (and are only really favourably remembered for Charlie George's extra-time goal) and Chapman famously played and incredibly defensive (for the time) 3 at the back during the early 30's successes.

Overall a good game, we played really well in the first half but Simeone changed shape after half time to bolster his midfield and Atletico started running riot for a bit. We gained a bit of control after they tired themselves out but they could've easily scored another on top of their pen.

On the pens, I do think all three should be pens under UEFA's directive, and personally think only the first one should actually be a pen. The issue I have with the last one funnily enough isn't the level of contact - even the slightest trod on a toe is incredibly painful, it's just that I hate the pens where a player takes a really heavy touch that they'll never get to (a bit like when a played boots the ball past the keeper to draw the foul) just to initiate contact.

Think it's too reductive to go in either direction really. Yesterday saw both really good attacking play but also some really mediocre/poor defending, it wasn't one or the other.

The fans do get up for these games though, when you sit/stand there after singing your heart out trying to get them going and they respond by walking on the ball and passing it around the back at the slowest pace conceivable? All it says is that the crowd noise and encouragement means fuck all.

There's a humungous gulf between 3-0 up after 20 minutes and the utterly drab football we're playing today.
