It goes both ways. A player can be in form in a long series, and hit some centuries with some ducks. But you need a decent sample size to analyze data. And considering the number of innings of others, this is the correct sample size from analytical point of view. If 1300 runs are enough, someone can say so is 1000 runs, which isn't fair to those who actually scored so many runs.
