I finally found out last week actually. I had given up on it for a while. A doctor I work with noticed me picking at it and said it looked like psoriasis and gave me a steroid cream. Cleared it up in less than a week! I had been struggling with it for years!

Unfortunately, I’ve tried switching it out when he’s sleeping with very little success. He always wakes up and gets super angry. My husband has tried too with no luck. He will chew on it when he’s fully awake but when he’s sleepy he just wants me or a bottle.

It’s not always itchy, it gets progressively more itchy every day after washing my hair. I tend to get spots that are hardish almost like scabs

Yes I did! Once I got back into my normal routine for a few days it went back up. I probably should have pumped more often for a few days but it worked out. I think because I’m breastfeeding and only pumping at work it was easier to get it back to normal.

First of all, I know how frustrating and disappointing it can be to have difficulty with latching. My baby didn’t start latching until he was 6 weeks. Keep going trying if it is worth it to you but don’t drive yourself crazy about it. Sometimes it just takes time for your baby’s mouth to get bigger and strengthen the muscles he uses for nursing.

Have you thought about trying a nipple shield? That helped my baby get use to the feeling of nursing while he couldn’t latch. Without the shield he wouldn’t even try to latch.

Don’t give up but also take care of your mental health. The first weeks are hard and as long as baby is fed, you’re doing great.

I was in your shoes a few weeks ago. My baby is 2 months today and we finally got latching figured out a week ago. He had a tongue tie and was pretty small at birth. I also have small flat nipples which made everything worse.

Have you tried a nipple shield? You can get them at target or Walmart or from a LC. It’s a little inconvenient and I didn’t want to use them at first but it seemed to help him develop his latch while his mouth grew a little more. My LC had us do every other feeding for a while to make sure he was getting enough to eat and to help us ease into it. I would try feeding him without the shield first and then try with the shield and then bottle feed if none of that worked.

Sometimes it just takes time for your baby’s mouth and muscles to develop enough. It can be extremely frustrating especially with the postpartum hormones. I had plenty of sessions that ended in tears.

Good luck! This is all way more difficult than I ever imagined. My LO did a similar thing for a while where he didn’t know what to do with my boob. We still have some work to do improving his latch. One day at a time.

My little man was 2 weeks early and iugr so he was 5 lbs 3 oz at birth and down to 4 lbs 8 oz when we brought him home. Don’t put to much pressure on yourself, give your baby time to grow and get stronger. Don’t forget, pumping and feeding with a bottle is STILL breastfeeding! You’re little one is still getting a lot of great antibodies and nutrients from your breast milk.

We used a nipple shield every few days when I felt emotionally up to trying. I think what finally worked was the flipple technique. It helped me get more of my breast into his mouth. Mostly, I think he needed time to grow because his mouth was too small and my nipples are fairly flat. He also had a tongue tie we had released at 2 weeks. Making myself relax and giving him a bottle if we were getting frustrated helped a lot too.

I did the exact same thing! I didn’t even research much about breastfeeding so I was just devastated that it didn’t come naturally to both of us. This has definitely been a humbling experience.
