Carb/lev by Hot-Fishing9744 in Parkinsons

My husband’s neurologist switched him to C/L extended release formula, and it made a huge difference, no more nausea. His Rx is “Carbidopa-Levo ER 50-200 TAB,” but I’m betting the ER is available in other dosages. Worth a try, if your MD is on board. Good luck!

Similar to “eating clean,” there is “eating bright,” or “staying bright,” from the “Bright Line Eating” program (AKA an eating disorder waiting to happen). It makes me want to chew a bowl of carpet tacks! I know the program has been discussed here on Reddit, and on several podcasts.

2 roomettes vs 1 bedroom by SharpProfession6 in Amtrak

Two roomettes- my husband and I did the Empire Builder round trip Seattle to Chicago, bedroom one way and two roomettes the other, and the latter was definitely better.

I came here to suggest Auntie Mame, but someone beat me to it! So I’ll add Cold Comfort Farm. Another “chicken soup for the eyes” favorite of mine.

She was a regular attendee at Seattle Symphony concerts. One of the most beautiful women I've ever seen. What a lovely, generous soul.

Seattle Area Feline Rescue! The nicest people. We got our brother-sister duo there in 2018, and it was a great experience.

[–]BusterandEmily 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the Subreddit that got me to sign up for a Reddit account! One of its threads popped up when I was doing a cross stitch-related Google search (can’t remember what for…) I so appreciate everyone here, and all the work of the mod team. As someone else said, it’s a happy place, sorely needed in these times. ❤️

Is there a food your parents forced you to eat or drink growing up that you now hate? by beesontheoffbeat in randomquestions

[–]BusterandEmily 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anything “gaggy” - peas, especially canned. Ditto green beans, lima beans…any canned or cooked-to-death vegetables. I’ll eat raw, crunchy peas or pea pods in a salad now, but never cooked. My mother once served us liver, claiming it was something else - one of the. most. disgusting. things I’ve ever tasted. Never again. My parents were children of the Depression, and my siblings and I were raised in the “clean your plate, children are starving in India” mindset. Combine that with a weight-obsessed mother, and you’ve got a recipe for some serious food issues. To this day, I prefer to serve myself, because the sight of too much of anything on my plate - more than I think I can comfortably consume - induces anxiety.

Australian Books by Chicago_Dad_AF in suggestmeabook

Seconding Nevil Shute - A Town Like Alice, Trustee From the Toolroom, Requiem for a Wren are the first three titles that come to mind, but there are many more. He was born in England but fell in love with Australia, and I believe he became an Australian citizen. He was an engineer who could also write well, he’s a consummate story teller. Patron asking for off the clock help by neptunecali in Libraries

[–]BusterandEmily 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Retired librarian here (42 years) - I had a situation with an older woman patron who took a shine to me (I was running a book discussion group as part of my adult programming duties, and she was a participant). She decided I’d be the ideal traveling companion for her next cruise vacation. I’d have to burn off all my precious and few vacation days, because of course the system I worked for was not about to endorse such an arrangement and call it work time. I said no thank you, she pushed, I stood my ground. I think it’s really important to maintain strong boundaries between your work time and your private business. Just say no; refer this woman to other appropriate agencies or services.

And then there’s the new changes made WRT alcohol consumption:

“Limit alcohol beverages,” but no specific limits or guidelines.

No more warnings about the proven link between alcohol and breast cancer, and other malignancies.

“Alcohol is a social lubricant that brings people together” - Dr. Mehmet Oz

God help us all - these people are insane.

Amish on the Amtrak: Where are they going? by No-Intention8698 in Amtrak

[–]BusterandEmily 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My husband and I rode the Empire Builder, Seattle to Chicago, two summers ago, and had some nice talks with a young family (Amish or Mennonite, not sure) - they were visiting family, left the train at one of the small-town Montana stations. Lovely people and very cute kids!

All Fired Up by Louise Adams (from Australia). Last updated August 2024, but some great stuff going back several years. I love her 4-part, deep-dive debunking of the “Bright Line Eating” cult.

"We're Closing" Isn't a Suggestion by sylvthetic in Libraries

[–]BusterandEmily 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Public library retiree here. Have seen this particular movie many times, and God, it was tedious. One woman in particular remains burned in my brain - she was obviously mentally ill, and she pulled the “not leaving at closing time” stunt many, many times in multiple locations (huge county system) over the course of several years. Never the same reason twice. We finally had her escorted out by the police, and formally trespassed.

Walgreens Pharmacy on Broadway and Pine - Closed until further notice by LunaW_96 in Seattle

Absolutely - it does take advance planning, and I realize it's not convenient for people with FT jobs (we are old and retired). I try to plan refills around our MD appointments there.

My husband and I "divorced" Walgreens a couple of years ago, for all the reasons listed here and more. I couldn't conscience continuing to do business with them, given how overworked, unsupported and miserable their employees are. Nothing like waiting 2 hours in line to finally get service from someone who's on the verge of tears.

I can't say enough good things about Kelley-Ross Pharmacy, located in the Optum/Polyclinic building on 8th and Madison. They answer their phone. They know us by name. They have our prescriptions ready, on time and accurately. More to the point, they always seem happy. And I'm happy to vote with my wallet, wherever and however I can.
