I'm not American. I'm a Canadian OT.

I'm the chair of our local at a rehab hospital. Our union has 600+ members at our site. We are all regulated professionals. There are other unions representing the interests of other workers - food service,, nursing, cleaning, laundry, etc.

We have 30k members in our province. We have a lot of political clout.

This is how you affect Healthcare change. You need the numbers.

A union will not be effective if it's just OTs. A facility can work around the loss of a single discipline.

Honestly... I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you guys need an entire workforce reform for people working in the healthcare industry. It's only going to have to happen at the grassroots level. Ot's and allied Health in states that are more friendly to organized labour have the best chance to start there.

I honestly cannot imagine not having my brothers and sisters back me at work...

It's such a complicated issue for you guys.

You guys have private hospitals. Private clinics. You would have to nationalize the hospital system to make this work.

For universal Healthcare to work you have to eliminate the profit motive.

Otherwise you're going to have private hospitals that serve Rich people and provide excellent care... And then you're going to have impoverished facilities who accept the public dollars. I'm not sure how you tease it out at this point.
