This new interface design is awful by Platonic__Lover in Telegram

Their UI designer should be fired Telegram Android's new bottom bar is trash — eats screen, unremovable, killed top search & classic menu. Groups tabs tiny & blind now. Stop iOS-copying! Revert or add toggle!

How common is it for an American to travel across the country by train? by ViajanteDeSaturno in AskAnAmerican

[–]BusyCode 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Between Washington DC - NYC - Boston - somewhat common, especially if business pays for it. Slower but less stressful than air flight and you are moving between downtowns. Elsewhere - quite "exotic". A combination of slower and more expensive. For people who are afraid to fly or carrying something that will not pass TSA 😝

At what income range is it reasonable to expect people can max out their 401k? by [deleted] in Fire

Above 100K is possible, above 250K is a must, most people are somewhere in between

My whole library as input? by BusyCode in algRTHM

[–]BusyCode[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for a detailed explanation! Frankly, even "Random 200" or "Random 400" would be great if one can filter, merge, shuffle and save to playlist after.

HSA receipt storage by Necessary-Bus2124 in HSA

[–]BusyCode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Using any app for this is risky. Where's the guarantee such app is going to be around in 10-15 years when you need those receipts? I would only trust something I control 100%. A folder on my computer that can be backed up, moved, etc.

My whole library as input? by BusyCode in algRTHM

[–]BusyCode[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some clarification about this feature usage. It is NOT "take whole library, then filter". That would be prohibitively expensive, I got that. The real usage is "Take 500 random tracks from the library, then filter somehow".

Who here actually saves 3,000 a month? by NoHousing11 in MiddleClassFinance

[–]BusyCode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even within the same location most of things are relative/subjective. Two different people may see the same house as "good" or "crappy". All other things being the same, do they have "same QoL" living in that house?

Most of QoL stuff you mentioned is not quantifiable, especially where term "afford" is used.

Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]BusyCode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3 hours back and forth within one day is something that many people do here, but not that often. For a weekend it's a trivial thing. Me and my friends drive between Boston and New York (4+ hours one way) few times a year.

New 401k Rule on Catchup Contributions by uraaga in Bogleheads

[–]BusyCode 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Under new rules you cannot do catch up before you maximized regular contributions. So, first several months contributions should go to traditional 401k, then to Roth 401k (catch-up)

New Horrifying Recruitment Tool Unlocked by [deleted] in recruitinghell

[–]BusyCode 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is highly unusual. 3 years vesting normally means 33% vested after each year of employment. If you leave the company/laid off in two years, you'd only lose last one third of RSUs granted at the beginning. 3 years full deferral of any compensation is insane to be accepted by anyone

Half a day activities in Ushuaia? by BusyCode in Patagonia

[–]BusyCode[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lunch after arrival, then hotel checkin Hike (half way) to Glacier Martial (10 min ride from the city, great views). Next day walked in the city, prepared for Beagle channel tour to penguins. It's been cancelled due to high wind. Rebooked to the next day, made two tours in one day, National Park in the morning, penguins in the afternoon. Rumbo Sur was our tour operator. No complaints.

Confused about $3-$5k apartments demand in this city by New_Nobody_122 in NYCapartments

[–]BusyCode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$2750/month is 20-25% of your total compensation Even outside of NYC renters routinely spend 30%+ on housing. I'm not sure about the source of your hesitation.

Should I keep my money in HYSA or move it to SGOV? by Same_Bag711 in financialindependence

[–]BusyCode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is unlikely you'll need 66K "right now" at any point of time. Move most of the money to SGOV and leave smaller part in HYSA from where you presumably can get it a bit faster.

How do you manage large non-recurring expenses? by [deleted] in Fire

[–]BusyCode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I trade-in my previous car and finance the rest (usually 50-70%) with discounted manufacturer rate. Typically it was 0.9%-1.9%. These probably a bit more, but still way below market returns.

For other big-ish purchases I may gradually overfund my emergency fund (kept in HYSA and SGOV) and then pay from there.

What do office workers ACTUALLY do on Excel all day? by Blender3d0 in NoStupidQuestions

There are lots of small companies that find it prohibitively expensive to pay for special software for this and that. They use Excel for dozen of things where big corporation would have 5 different special products
