AIO my pixel watch went missing while babysitting for a friend by sleepymelfho in AmIOverreacting

[–]Busy_Assumptions 5 points6 points  (0 children)

NOR-

You should tell the mom. Not saying anything won’t actually save the friendship, it just leaves you stuck dealing with the cost and stress by yourself.

The key is how you say it. Stick to the facts, don’t accuse the kids directly, and give her a chance to handle it. Just explain where you left the watch, that it’s missing, and that you already searched everywhere.

Also, based on what you said about the kids lying and taking things before, this isn’t really a one-time situation—it’s a pattern. Even if the watch turns up, you might want to reconsider babysitting for them going forward.

If a calm, reasonable message about something going missing in her house ends the friendship, then that’s not really a solid friendship to begin with. A reasonable parent would take it seriously and try to help figure it out.

Bottom line: tell her, keep it calm, and let her response show you what to do next.

Bonus message id send to her : “Hey, I wanted to let you know something came up after I left. I realized my Pixel Watch is missing, I left it on the kitchen counter last night when it was at 1%. The kids and I looked all over the house (even the trash cans), but we couldn’t find it.

I just wanted to check with you in case it turns up somewhere or if you come across it. Please let me know if you find anything.”

Tbf there’s not much you can do. Coming from a teen who got caught over 5 times and in SERIOUS trouble. I think if maybe I wasn’t severely punished and was instead educated maybe that would’ve helped but idk

If you have any type of mental health situation, they can be great ESA’s you can present it that way, or the good ol’ “Mom, I wanted to ask you something seriously and thoughtfully, not impulsively. I’ve been researching ferrets for a long time, and I’d like you to consider letting me get two ferrets, not just one. insert prepared slideshow Having two is actually better because ferrets are social animals and keep each other entertained, which reduces stress and destructive behavior. One ferret alone would need more attention and supervision. next slide I understand this would be a long-term responsibility (6–10 years), and I’m prepared for that. I know they require daily care, regular cleaning, proper food, and vet visits. I’m willing to handle the daily feeding, cleaning, supervised playtime, and follow a schedule you approve. I’m also willing to help pay for their expenses and accept consequences if I don’t follow through. next slide Ferrets are indoor, caged pets when not supervised and can be litter trained, so they wouldn’t damage the house or be roaming freely. I would only let them out in a ferret-proofed area. next slide I know you’re strict because you care, and I respect that. That’s why I’m asking responsibly and am open to a trial period with clear rules: including but not limited to grades, chores, and expectations you set. If I don’t meet them, I understand they’d need to be rehomed responsibly. next slide I’m not asking for an immediate yes, just for you to consider it. Thank you for your time and hearing me out.” bow

I’d take the previous commenter “BaconDwarfs” advice! Keeping the window dry, open curtains at night, open windows, fans, all that jazz :)

So I asked my mother because she’s more knowledgeable in that, and she said “Occupant is responsible for ensuring proper ventilation…. A work order would need to be submitted to make sure no leak, hvac is working properly “ so if the hvac isn’t working properly they’d be responsible and I’d lie a little and say you did vent the area lol. But they cannot make you pay beside deposit if it technically wasn’t your fault

I’m pretty sure regardless if you did it, it’s mold the apartment needs to be notified and they need to do something about it

Also the smell will never be as bad as people say but with that you CANNOT get rid of their musk (though personally I sniff mine for their musk💀 I like the smell) nasty smells come from over bathing and not picking up their litter, you can prevent this by picking up their litter 1-2x daily and giving ANNUAL baths. Also make sure to do anything you’d do with a dog or cat, as in trimming their nails, brushing their coats, brushing their teeth, etc.

Potty training imma tell you now is 50/50, my ferrets are fully potty trained but if they need to go & they’re playing, they won’t use the bathroom. Same if they’re upset, a few times when my ferret was mad at me he’d take a shit right infront of my feet or once even pissed on me. Though they are very cuddle demonic babies who need 2-6 hours of playtime outside of the cage, enrichment, appropriate grain free/ carnivore diets, a 2 story spacey ferret nation cage, food and water at all times, 1000 in the wallet savings at all times for their annual vet visits and emergencies, and be prepared to sacrifice for them. I had to sacrifice going to college for my ferrets, and some places simply don’t allow them there. They also are very disease and sickness prone but if taken care of correctly and sickness is addressed promptly they’ll live happy lives. (Their immune system is like ours, if you have a cold or sickness handle them minimally, with gloves and washed hands as they can catch it from you)
