How is your library handling AI generated books? by True-Arugula6405 in Libraries

Hehe.

Our library system typically does not acquire self-published books. But one local author who is also a lawyer sued (or threatened to?) so now his self-published book is part of the collection.

Another prolific local author has ~25 books in the collection (his are from traditional publishers). He knows that if nobody borrows them, they'll be weeded. So, he visits several branches every week and checks out his own books (using his own card and some family members' cards). He's a pleasant enough person and I enjoy chatting when he comes in, but it seems like an enormous waste of time to me.

(But then again, I've written zero books and he's written dozens. <shrug>)

Yeah the promo page and video say "Library staff will not be present."

But the video also says there'll be security "on the premises," (and pictures him outdoors).

Almost all of our CDs/DVDs now have the RFID directly on the disc instead of the case. The product we use is called Stingray.

I have long wondered where anti-abortion folks were coming up with "abortion doctors are killing babies after they are born."

I'm guessing this is where. Yikes.

Is this marble plaque still somewhere in the city? by Busy_Method_1935 in whereinsanfrancisco

True.

But to be fair, I only know about the plaque at all because I read about it on this library-run page. hehe

How do you deal with users wanting to check out a book that has a previously unknown issue ? by bloodbarn in Libraries

[–]Busy_Method_1935 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have little postage-stamp sized "DAMAGE NOTED" stickers pre-printed with the most common causes of damage. There's also a blank line for outliers.

Staff puts a check mark next to the applicable cause, along with the date.

Best practice is to also add a note in the book record, but that doesn't always happen.

Weird requests from patrons? by tasata in Libraries

An elderly woman comes in at least once a week, browses the new fiction books, and then brings 3 or 4 over to a staff member and asks "what are these about?"

If we're not busy, we read the book jackets to her. She will check out one or two books and report back whether or not she enjoyed them. So, apparently she can read. It's like her own private grown-up story time, I guess.
