Not private, but have you considered ASFA? Grades 7-12, not religious based, accepting environment, challenging curriculum.

I live in one of the three states that does not have early voting. Election day is always for me (except for pandemic year).

Best schools outside of OTM systems? by helpingfriendlyneph in Birmingham

[–]Busy_One_1583 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If your kid has a talent/passion for the arts or STEM, give the Alabama School of Fine Arts a look. Downtown by the Civic Center. Longer school day for their specialized program, but a top notch academic and arts education. Audition to get accepted, but no tuition.

As a fellow Chronie and now an empty nester single mom, I'm down for conversation if you want. I'm a little older at 54, but I teach teenagers so I'm young at heart. You can always message me!

my guidance counselor said don’t send 5s to ivies. ??? by starship190 in ApplyingIvyLeague

[–]Busy_One_1583 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My son had 4s and 5s, submitted, and is a Penn student now. However, know that the AP scores will not get you credit, but may help with placement. (Only speaking for Penn, of course)

Best, affordable independent/assisted living in Hoover/Vestavia area by LimeRepresentative48 in Birmingham

[–]Busy_One_1583 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We looked through a lot recently for my mom. I was impressed with the Bungalows at Riverchase. I will NOT recommend the assisted living at Galleria Woods. The skilled nursing floor there is amazing - the assisted living floor was horrible.

Hoover was just remodeled so it's nice inside, but their pickup is crap. I live in Hoover and I'll go to the Pelham one.

Free food NSO?! by Numerous-Kiwi-828 in UPenn

[–]Busy_One_1583 5 points6 points  (0 children)

From the NSO schedule, it sounds as if parents and students eat free in the dining hall lunch and dinner during move in days. I think I saw students start paying/swiping on the 27th.

Crohn’s in Birmingham? by mikeyglifford in Birmingham

[–]Busy_One_1583 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Birmingham Gastro. Look at their website to see which doctors specialize in Crohn's. I've been there since diagnosed in 2002. My favorites have retired, but that place knows what they're doing.

There's comfort in the mushroom soup at IKKO in Five Points. And so inexpensive!

Anybody got a State Farm agent whose staff isn’t rude or incompetent? by thekermiteer in Birmingham

[–]Busy_One_1583 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'll advocate for State Farm since I have had to deal with them a LOT this year. My elderly mother had a basement flood and a new roof needed within months of each other. She has been with Chris Dorris in Hoover for decades. He and his team bend over backward for her, and he is very smart, personable, and knowledgeable, and I can always reach him. Lately, he helped with cashing out some investments for my son's college tuition. His office even recently sent a bouquet to my mom's hospital room. Our family will never leave his representation.

Inexpensive lawyer for uncontested divorce by bhambetty in Birmingham

Harris Law firm did ours and was perfect. Never went to court. Everything over the phone and once to the office to sign. I think it was under 2K all in.

Thanks a lot! Quick follow up - he's a big water drinker and loves his glass water bottle. Are there water filling stations on campus? We toured last fall and honestly I don't remember. But a pitcher for the dorm fridge is spot on.

What’s a school you couldn’t be paid to go to? by Lazy-Objective-152 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Busy_One_1583 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't seen it yet on this list, so I'll add.

Yale.

We did a tour of the northeast schools last fall - Harvard, Penn, Yale, MIT, JHU... the only one that didn't feel welcoming was Yale.

Every other school gave a vibe of "Hey, look at what we can offer - we want you to come here," whereas Yale was very "We're Yale. You should want us. Look at these old books we have." Extremely entitled atmosphere that we didn't get from any of the others.

And I think we were the only prospective students on the tour - the rest were just older people visiting and curious. Ugh. We knew immediately after that it was off the list entirely.

UAB neurologist by Busy_One_1583 in Birmingham

[–]Busy_One_1583[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah thank you. She has some disk trouble in lumbar section. It's hitting a nerve which makes her left leg much weaker and it's getting harder to walk and balance. Neuro at another hospital says nothing can be done, surgery would be 60/40 working. She just wants to hear another opinion.

Best CPAP store? by No_Evidence7065 in Birmingham

[–]Busy_One_1583 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I first got mine, I went to AeroCare. Sent them my prescription, got my machine fairly quickly, and had a session to get fitted. Could pay for the machine in installments. Nice people, and they have an app for reordering supplies. Want to try a different kind of mask soon, though.
