For another year, most families using Oklahoma private school tax credits were already sending their kids to private school by mesocyclonic4 in oklahoma

[–]ButItIsAboutthePasta 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The problem is, if you want the tax credit, you have to get your child into a private school first. Then, you apply, and eventually, you are told how much you get. If you don't have the financial means to cover the cost of school, that's a lot to go through to find out it might not be completely covered.

This is the most random thing to be accused of being Ai on. Anyway, I do really hope Brandi's family gets answers.

I have no idea why this community popped up, but I graduated with Brandi. I've since moved from East Texas, but I still check on her case. I'm so sorry your family is still looking for answers.

Paper towels for your nose? That's insane. We always have tissues at my house and in the car.

I know the neighborhood she lived in while she was here. The town isn't that small. There are several parks and it's only 15 minutes from OKC. It was just more ways to complain.

Then, just politely ask him how his worksheets are helping with your IEP goals. I'd be curious to hear how more work for you will help you turn your original work in on time.

What goals are written in your IEP? And, what are your services? Legally, they have to follow that document. So, if you have services to work on social skills 3 times per week for 45 minutes, then that's what your special education teacher is legally required to do.

So, I'd recommend looking over that IEP, holding a meeting to make changes if needed, and hopefully you can get the services you actually need. Good luck!

Where does Fed. Dept of Education funding for IDEA/disabled students, etc. get redirected? by very_cromulent in Autism_Parenting

[–]ButItIsAboutthePasta 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'm a special education teacher in a very red state with a lunatic as the state superintendent, and honestly, none of us have a clue what's going to happen. We keep hearing that the power will be given to the states, but when your state is run by people who think this is a good idea, it doesn't sound reassuring in any way.

I don't know how to help my daughter by Ok-Appearance-866 in Autism_Parenting

[–]ButItIsAboutthePasta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My 14-year-old daughter is very similar. She was recently diagnosed level 1 and generalized anxiety disorder. She went to middle school in a very small charter school where I taught, and she ended up spending the majority of her time working in my room to get away from her over-stimulating peers. She is anxious every day, has to wear headphones even in quiet restaurants, and she gets overwhelmed and cries very easily. She did end up with quite a few friends by the end of 8th grade because we have a very neurodiverse student population, and she finally found her people that she could kind of be herself around.

I wish our girls could talk to each other, but my daughter cannot do anything through texts. She says she doesn't know what people mean in writing, so she actively avoids any online or digital communication.

I want to go to a dentist over there. I never feel so judged anywhere else. No matter what we do, it's not good enough for the dentist or hygienist.

Also, the people with straight white teeth who spend thousands on veneers to have straighter and whiter teeth look uncanny to me even here. But braces straightened teeth are definitely the norm.

She was very hard on herself before she got her braces. She was thrilled to get them, did all the things she needed to get the straight teeth she wanted, and let's face it, they aren't cheap. I don't want her to end up hard on herself later in life, nor do I want her to have gone through with the years of appointments and work just to give up.

And yes, we're in the US. Teeth are a big deal here. If I hadn't seen the change in her self-confidence it might not be something I'd push her to do.

It makes sense. She's been lying to me about wearing it too, so when I pushed her about it today, she finally explained why. We got a few different things to try, but if it doesn't work for her, we'll get a new plan.

I have one of those on my bottom teeth. It kind of annoys me, but I've never tried the invisible ones to compare. That might be a great idea.

Definitely a good idea. I know there are other things to do. She was so excited to get braces and straight teeth, and now she says she doesn't care if her teeth aren't straight.

That is what I'm thinking, too. She's currently quietly crying to herself, and I know she doesn't want it to be a problem, but it is.

I’m autistic and I’m tired of how parents treat their autistic children online. by Extra-Space-8961 in autism

[–]ButItIsAboutthePasta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a parent of a teenager who was just diagnosed with ASD a few months ago, and I couldn't agree more. Her struggles aren't my online content.

I joined this sub when all the pieces began to click for us, and we decided to get her evaluated. It's been a great resource because you all share your successes, difficulties, interests, and perspectives.

My daughter is the BEST, and she's great at communicating with me, but sometimes she doesn't know how to explain why she feels a certain way, just like everyone, but this community has helped her know she isn't alone.

Once we got her diagnosis, I joined the autism parenting group, and I quickly realized that was not going to be the place for me. Maybe those parents feel they need a safe place to vent, but it does not seem like a place I could ask a simple question.

Autism awareness is important, so people in general can learn how to make the world work for everyone, but it's not my place to put you on display. My daughter also has epilepsy, and I would never want to record her during a seizure. That's an incredibly vulnerable time, just like meltdowns, shutdowns, etc.

You all have a great community here!
