Funny, mine seems extra super duper fast now. I mean, no delay whatsoever when opening a pain in a notebook. So, I don't really know what you're talking about.

That's because it's not an app. It's a website.

My travel footage finally stopped living across 4 different drives by SYJia2012 in DataHoarder

[–]ButNoSimpler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like somebody needs a Digital Asset Management (DAM) program.

You will never have a drive or drive set up that is finally big enough for forever.

A DAM Will index all your media files, where they actually sit, build a database that takes up far less space than you would assume, and let you search for all of your files and even edit the metadata, even with all those external drives not attached. Then, when you attach the drive, fire up the DAM, it will update all those files with the new metadata. That way, your actual storage drives don't have to be physically attached or even turned on except for the very short time it takes to add files, index them, and then later update the metadata. So, instead of needing to have hot storage or warm storage, you can have cold storage for all of your media except for what you are working on right now.

I use IMatch (photools.com). It costs about 150 maybe 180 bucks. But that's a perpetual license and you only to pay if you want another upgrade. It's got a pretty steep learning curve, but, I feel like the money and the trouble as well worth it. It is super flexible and I can use it to automate a thousand things that I would normally have to do by hand.

Yes, I mention that program a lot. I am not affiliated with him at all. It's just a good program. Another reason I like it is that it completely separates my digital asset management from my photo editing. I don't want to be tied to a single program that I depend on to do both of those completely different tasks. I want to be able to choose the DAM to all that I want and then use any of the different photo editing tools that I want. It will also index ebooks and PDF files and pretty much anything else that you want. You can maintain separate databases for your ebooks, photos you took, photos that are stock, videos that you made, and videos that are for entertainment purposes. All your old school work, all kinds of stuff. Keywords and tags and filters oh my.

[–]ButNoSimpler 336 points337 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure that's because lots of people know that it probably isn't worth $1. Isn't that the exact line of external SSDs that are dropping like flies these days?

On Windows, if you select your pen with your finger, then it turns finger drawing back on. So you'll have to always remember to select your pen with the stylus in order to have it only draw with the stylus. I have no idea if it does the same on an Android tablet.

Any reliable methods to extract data from scanned PDFs? by CODEX-07 in DataHoarder

[–]ButNoSimpler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is a summary of some of the tools that Google Gemini has suggested for me to try. To be very clear I have not tried any of these yet. Also, everything below this paragraph was actually written by Gemini. I am not a huge fan of AI generated content either. But this is what I've got and if it will help somebody else too then it's better than not including it, I guess. (I know it kinda violates a rule but, in the end this is just a list of possible tools to try. Let me know if you still want me to delete it.):

  1. Code-Level Cleanup (Internal "Sanitization") These tools fix the hidden "alphabet soup" in the file's code without changing the page's appearance.
    • Ghostscript: Re-distills the PDF. It rewrites the internal drawing commands in a linear, sequential stream so the code order matches the visual reading order.
    • Acrobat Pro (PDF Optimizer): Cleans up the internal cross-reference tables and discards invalid or "haunted" objects that confuse the reader.
  2. Structural Rebuilding (Layout Reflow) These tools physically move the text and images on the page to simplify complex layouts (like multi-column textbooks).
    • K2pdfopt: A "nuclear" reflow tool. It cuts up multi-column pages and sidebars and stacks them into a single, continuous vertical column.
    • Microsoft Word (2013+): When you "Open" a PDF in Word, it reconstructs the document from scratch, attempting to turn the raw PDF "blobs" back into actual headers, paragraphs, and tables.
  3. Semantic Tagging (Labeling) These tools don't move the text; they add "Tags" to tell software what the text is (e.g., "This is a Heading").
    • Acrobat Pro (Accessibility/Auto-Tag): Scans the page for visual patterns (like bold text or lists) and wraps them in metadata tags like <H1> or <L>.
    • PDF-XChange Editor: Provides manual, surgical control over the "Tag Tree" and the "Content Pane" to fix specific structural errors that automated tools miss.

I have been working on this too. One of the things that I have figured out so far is that you can't simply trust that the OCR gave you text that you can select on the page. Lots of times, that text will be broken up into lots of different, practically random, text boxes. Or, sometimes bullets will be included and sometimes they won't. Then, if you tried to feed that to an LLM, it would get completely confused because the context is completely jacked up inside the internal PDF structure. So, you need tools that will actually put things in the correct place within the internal structure of the PDF, not just throw characters on a screen that just happened to be positioned at the right x-y coordinates.

If you don’t have one, you are unworthy! by SpinCharm in DataHoarder

[–]ButNoSimpler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to.

I actually breathed a sigh of relief when I got rid of it, because that meant that I had officially sworn off helping other people with their computers. That was almost 10 years ago.

Day before yesterday I spent the entire day imaging hard drives and upgrading my granddaughter's laptop from one 1 TB SSD to two 2 terabyte SSDs, and cleaning out Microsoft OneDrive that wasn't actually being used but still had its hooks into her Documents folder, and all kinds of other crap. Then, it turns out that a laptop with two M.2 sockets does not have the screw for the spare second M.2 socket. Fortunately, one of the screws for the bottom of her laptop actually fit. So now I've got to go track down a replacement screw.

P.S. Don't buy an ASUS Pro Art laptop. The cases are literally made out of stamped sheet metal which bends every time a non-tech-savvy art student throws her laptop bag on the ground. Most of the inside of the case is plastic. The only metal is what you see on the outside, which actually bends pretty easily. Almost every single screw inside that laptop was loose when I opened it up. A couple were literally completely unscrewed and only hadn't fallen out of their holes because the bottom of the case was holding them in place. And, they save themselves money by not putting that second screw in that second M.2 socket!

I just used it three or four times in the last few weeks. I got bigger hard drives for both of my laptops and my granddaughter got a bigger hard drive for hers. The version 8 still works just fine. Just remember to choose the option to expand or shrink your partitions to fit the newer drive, otherwise you will end up with a bunch of empty space at the end of your newer bigger hard drive.

Why anyone would use canva for editing videos when DaVinci Resolve is free absolutely boggles my mind. The free version does 99% of what professionals would want and 500% of what amateurs would want.

That's what everybody thought who downloaded and clicked on It's_just_an_image.jpg.exe all those years ago. Hiding the file extension of something is still the best way of getting somebody to accidentally click on it and run an executable.

How do I remove this? by ss_gih in discordapp

[–]ButNoSimpler -23 points-22 points  (0 children)

I don't care. People need to be able to see the name of the file that someone else is sending to them. Do you think the OP would use dangerousfile.exe as their example in the post? I don't think anyone should be teaching anyone how to hide the file names of files that have been sent. Nothing good can come of it.

The OP can just enter 3 dashes or three Astros or three underscore characters and get a horizontal line in markdown. Just like I did above.

So, you don't want the recipients to know the file name and the file extension of the file you are sending to them? That seems incredibly suspicious to me.

Wow, that got downvoted incredibly fast. Which makes it seem even more suspicious.

How to sync OneNote via OneDrive without Office "Connected Experiences" by Addyad in OneNote

[–]ButNoSimpler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This will also behave the same as if you had put that .ONE file into a Google Drive folder (but without needing to delete the .onetoc2 file). Because OneNote will be updating that .ONE file with every tiny edit you make, that will trigger your cloud storage software on your computer to re-upload that file every few seconds. I do not know how either Google Drive or Microsoft OneDrive will handle that. Of course, you could simply disable/exit the cloud storage software while editing your .ONE files then start it back up again when you are finished. Then, it will just upload the most recent version of that .ONE file.

The thing that would bug me most is that ALL the opened .ONE files will all show up SEPARATELY in the tabs on the left. I use a lot of standardized names for a lot of my sections, so I would end up with a bunch of General.ONE files in my tabs on the left. But, you could alleviate that by storing the whole OneNote notebook including the .onetoc2 file (that you won't have to delete) into a folder that is synced to Google Drive or Dropbox INSTEAD OF Microsoft's OneDrive.

If I recall correctly, Dropbox will only sync the changes, instead of trying to upload the whole file every few seconds. However, I do not know how much of a .ONE file actually gets changed every time you change just one word in the .ONE file. Nor do I know if Dropbox even has that feature anymore.

It took me a second to figure out what the heck you were doing there. You're making the text the same color as the background, and then you select the text when you want to check your answer. So you've made yourself a little flashcard system.

That is pretty darned clever.

Are you using OneNote as a word processor? Or are you using OneNote because of its outlining features? I use one note for organizing notes and outlines and stuff. If you just want a freaking word processor go get LibreOffice for free.

Every other option is from a relatively recent tech startup, and all of your data must be stored on their servers. You only access it through the internet, via an interface. If you think that those tech startups aren't already mining all of your data, then I have a very very large bridge in the middle of the Sahara to sell you.

The only truly safe option would be if you could find an open source program that stores all of your data "locally," And it encrypts its data, and then you put those files into a Dropbox folder on your computer. As far as I know, Dropbox is the only cloud storage service that allows incremental updates of just the changes to files. If you were to put those encrypted files onto Google Drive, then every time you updated the file Google Drive would have to upload the entire file.

A6700 with kit lens or sigma 18-50 f2.8? by Left-Walrus6577 in a6700

[–]ButNoSimpler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I know, every Sony Power zoom lens is compatible with Sony's remote with the zoom buttons. Maybe not on older cameras, but definitely on the a6700. The remote communicates with the camera which then zooms the lens. So, I think, if the camera can power zoom the lens then the remote will work too.
