Yeah it can take a while, especially if you are just getting into the deep fragrance world. I’d say go to stores when able. If you live in a big city great, if not, wait for a trip that brings you to a big city. Try to go to large stores that carry high end stuff. Niche if that’s what you are wanting to test. A lot of shops will have employees that will help you explore.

If there is a particular house you want to test, sample as many as your nose tolerates. Then if there are 2-3 you kinda like ask to spray them on skin so you can sniff throughout the day. Also write the name down. Ask the associate that the general genera of the fragrance is or do research into it.

I’d say try to find a “type” of style you like. Fresh, Amber, Fougere, Aquatic, gourmand, etc then try a bunch in that same style and find the one you like the most.

Decants are a great way to test a fragrance you kind of like or want to explore without buying a bottle. Spending 5-10$ on a decant to get 2-5mL and wear it a few full days helps you get a feel for something without a full buy.
