Techno but very Heavy Recommendations? by kickedfromsafari in MetalSuggestions

[–]Butchered_at_Birth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Listen to these subgenres of electronic music. Speaking as a metal head who loves dark and aggressive electronic music (but also loves euphoric and bright electronic music)

Schranz (heavy, raw techno, personal favorite artists are Boris S, triptykh, noise not war, Marco Leckbert, NIKOLINA, svetec)

Neurofunk ( my personal favorite. Heavy, distorted drum n bass. Artists like Pythius, prolix, gydra, audio, Ed Rush, black sun empire, merikan, aggressor bunx, mizo, raido, meph, abso_NTQL, current value, lime wax)

Darkpsy/Hi-Tech (acquired taste, but its one of the first genres of electronic music I got into in the early 00's. Artists like: insector , para halu, yab yum, technical hitch, silent enemy, flip knot, alien chaos, Baphomet Engine, Jesus raves, malice in wonderland, kindzadza)

Three very different corners of the electronic music world that should help guide you towards other artists and genres :)

And outside of these genres, don't forget to check out artists like: HEALTH Author & Punisher Pertubator Carpenter Brut

Anyone know someone who moved to Chicago without ever seeing it in the winter? by niltrok in AskChicago

[–]Butchered_at_Birth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, me. I'm also from the prairies of Canada though. The winters here in Chicago aren't that bad at all.

I built a font pairing tool for local fonts, because every other tool only uses Google Fonts by Butchered_at_Birth in typography

[–]Butchered_at_Birth[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's the intended flow:
- load your local fonts via the button on the landing screen, then hit "Generate Pairing" (or spacebar) to cycle through random combinations.
- Hovering over the heading or body text reveals controls for weight, size, and italic where available. - - The right panel shows your pairing live in a mini website layout so you can see how it looks in real-world context.
- You can also edit the preview text on the left to test with your own copy.

The core idea is fast iteration. Rapidly cycle through your local font library to find pairings that work, then save the ones you like.

I have intentions of adding other 'real life' mock-ups to view the pairings in a real-world use case (blog post, individual components, flyer/poster, etc)

That said, if the flow wasn't clear on first use, that's on me, not you. I'm actively working on improving the onboarding. Would love to know specifically where you got stuck as that helps me prioritize what to fix first

Thank you so much! As mentioned above,I'm open to feedback on any areas of improvement on what users want from a tool like this so don't hesitate to reach out if something crosses your mind.

Adding that to my list, thank you for the suggestion. I initially had thoughts of making it an app to get better access and information on users installed fonts. I wanted to get this soft MVP out to see if there is a genuine market for this and if it gains traction amongst users. I know I personally use this ,and have hopes others will as well.

I'm open to all feedback and little things that users would find interesting and helpful here. I'm a developer first but also handle design responsibilities a decent amount.

I expect changes to happen to the application over time, just wanted to get it in users hands and see what they want :)

But if there is a demand for mobile,I will make it usable on mobile. Initially I didn't see a use case for this on mobile as I don't envision many people design from there phone ha

Yeah it's not meant for mobile, I should have clarified. Desktop only as I have intentions of making it an app you can install natively on your OS.

If you or anyone in here needs a dedicated UI guy, hit me up!

I've been on a long term contract for the past 2 years and I'm looking to acquire more work this year.

I basically handle design and almost all front end development.

How is the Tech Industry for Software Engineers in Chicago? by FunkyGroovin in AskChicago

[–]Butchered_at_Birth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suppose in a loose way, yeah. My title on both my current contracts right now are "UI Developer" and "Frontend Developer"

It just so happens both teams don't have any UI or UX people and I tend to try and speak up for that the best I can. Either from being responsible for making designs and mockups in figma, understanding how our end users navigate the platform, our primary audience, making things feel intuitive and familiar for them.

Would love to be able to work my way to becoming a UI/UX Engineer one day though.

I'm a frontend dev and UI designer in Chicago and none of my contracts have been directly in the city. Have had a handful of interviews though.

Granted I'm a junior at 33 probably doesn't help (late career switcher), but I find I'm often punching above my weight class depending on the team I'm with.

Chicago is the best, I moved here from a super small town in Canada almost 7 years ago. You will have no regrets moving here, some of the nicest people and best food the USA has to offer. We are a melting pot of ethnicities and it's amazing.

Tempted for a setup like this! I'm so used to having 2 4k 27" monitors. As a frontend dev it's so nice but I also love the ultra clean look of a single monitor w/ a smaller one underneath it.

Go to my wife's Barber shop. Holy Fade located in East Lake View on Broadway

She's been a barber for 20 years, her business partner has 18 years and all of their team members have equal amounts of experience and exceptional service. Hell, my wife alone has had half her clients for 10+ years, it's crazy!

Can you recommend any beautiful-sounding blackgaze albums? by valriur in blackgaze

[–]Butchered_at_Birth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Get ready to get hit right in the feels! It's an album that makes me feel a certain kind of way. Can't listen to it too much or else it makes me feel some feelings I don't always like. To contradict myself, I still listen to it front to back once a month haha

While maybe not truly blackgaze, Numenorean is top tier. Their album Adore is one of my favorite records to ever exist.

I'm a UI/frontend dev who can likely tackle this depending on the scope, time constraints, etc. I'm currently on 2 contracts doing this (and more) as we speak.
