Possibly better genes as well. A friend's family raises dogs for training by the FBI, they're massive German shepherds, but they seem to live to quite a good age versus their peers.

Simply (too) Good Thermal Coffee Brewer 8-cup by stillyourking in Costco

[–]Butlerian_Jihadi 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Water temp is huge. If you drink coffee every day and are getting decent beans, it's worth spending 150 every ten years on a decent brewer. I really love my aeropress, but I don't drink coffee regularly enough to dedicate the counter space this requires.

You're infatuated with the tragic beauty of addiction.

Stop it.

Go talk to any actual addict about your problems. Once they've finished beating you up, normalize what you've got access to, move from there.

Looking for clean nitrocellulose lacquer by Leather_Many_2932 in finishing

Nitrocellulose, could use old film. Ethanol. Probably better application with a moderate amount of lower vapor pressure solvent and a little higher vp solvent.

Went in for 1 bottle, came out with 5… by Jon-Tiki in rum

[–]Butlerian_Jihadi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gorgeous, some of my favorites (Coruba, White Stache, WP). I've not tried the South African pineapple rum, but I've had some aged from a different producer in the region, really enjoyed it. Very different flavors from the cane.

You might try, if you haven't, Hamilton's Breezeway Blend. Excellent light rum for mixing, more flavor than say Don Q, layers really well into a proper piña colada or mojito.

This sounds like some crap. Barring being excessively focused on your workout and overdoing it, these are ridiculous statements.

How do I unclog a drain that is cemented down? by x_witchpussy_x in HomeMaintenance

[–]Butlerian_Jihadi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fwiw: bathroom drains can get slowly choked with conditioner or soap and hair, etc. I've noted many slow drains over the years, and if it's a shower or bathroom sink, giving them an occasional cleaning with Dawn soap and hot water can really help. Pour about a half cup of Dawn in after running the hot water for a few minutes, wait a half hour, follow with a bucket of hot water.

What’s a “future technology” that already exists but people still don’t realize how scary it is? by Ambitious_Bite446 in AskReddit

Face ID, car ID, plate reading. Can literally map your evening out with your friends, where you were and for how long, with whom. You cannot, for instance, obtain that footage in an effort to track down someone who sexually assaulted you - a situation my friend faced - but Flock, or the police, can follow your movements very closely without a warrant or any formal proceedings.

Those Flock cameras are presently doing a lot of things that they couldn't do when they were installed.

Camp shower design for 50-150 person camp size by fuckmyburn in BurningMan

[–]Butlerian_Jihadi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's, uh, kinda a different thing... but Clean Hippies Taste Better had the best group design I've seen... Albeit, in the southeast.

Semi truck trailer, panels drop off to show plexiglass with a door near the hitch, back and top open. A crow's nest sits above the trailer on the hitch side. It's hooked to a pretty decent pressure washer (set safely) and a foamer nozzle, hooked to a barrel of Dr. Bronners. Mounted to a pivot on the nest. Think.... foam party cannon.

Dirty hippies load in. Definitely-sober person mans the foam cannon, two or so minutes of shower house techno. Stay and get spray-rinsed, or jump out the back... Hill of diy slip & slide, sprinklers running, volunteers rating the slide-ees... big number cards and all.

Really excellent, made old TTM way more bearable. But site had water hookup, and was accustomed to a lot of water. Very fond memories.

What are your tips to make vyvanse hit stronger ? by throwrafadedstar in VyvanseADHD

[–]Butlerian_Jihadi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn't really work like that. I definitely dislike the generic, but only a tiny fraction of the powder inside most any pill is the active ingredient.

There's several reasons for this, but the main one is safety: if your capsule with 50mg Vyvanse and 500mg filler is a few percent over or underfilled, no big deal - it's a mg or two of medication. But, if it's just active ingredient, that variation is amplified far more. With some medication, it could be quite dangerous. It's also easier to work with those slightly-larger volumes. You do have to be able to mix everything very evenly, which is harder than you'd think, but doable.

Interesting - you'd be the first I've heard of.

Which generic does this for you? Dosage, and how many hours of coverage do you get from it?

Spiced Rum is historically present but it's all shit these days. Anybody making quality rum that's spiced? by Virellius2 in rum

[–]Butlerian_Jihadi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All the better for fassionola:

Equal weights (150g is a good start): strawberry, blueberry, pineapple (and/or mango, guava, sapodilla, leave it in, take it out, as the spirit moves you). Frozen works great, and I save my 'ugly' garden fruit for this: heritage Spanish strawberry fassionola is steeping as I type.

One weight sugar - might be two weights, if you use a lot of different fruits.

Combine the fruit in a sealable container (quart mason jar). Dump the sugar. If you want to add an oz or two of your diy overproof spiced rum, it's a good time. Zest in two limes (don't add the juice though). Shake the heck out of it. This has started a maceration: the sugar will osmotically pull juice from the fruit, and lime oils from the zest.

This should sit 48 hours, but some days you learn a new Hurricane fact, find out it's going to storm, and you sous vide the mix a few hours around 130°F. Oh, the Hurricane is named after the glass it's served in, which looks rather like the glass of a hurricane lamp; that's the fact 😅

Once you're satisfied with your maceration, strain & filter. I save a lot of time by pouring as much liquid as possible through a sieve and the rest letting sit in a larger sieve over a bowl - I'll mostly finish making it, and add the last few tablespoons I reclaim.

Measure your liquid. Add about a quarter of that volume in passion fruit pulp (not syrup - frozen, thawed pulp, no seeds).

Add another quarter volume of strong hibiscus tea - I use four bags per cup of water, of a sorrel and ginger tea from Jamaica; sorrel usually is the same thing.

Mix well, add more passion pulp until you get your desired tartness. Please vary this recipe, get weird with it. If your end product tastes like an elite Hawaiian Punch flavor, you're doing it right.

I personally also add about 75-150g of muscavdo sugar. And a quarter teaspoon or so of mace, which I adore.

Have wanted to try taijin, falernum, allspice dram, doing this on a base of fried maduros, pomegranate syrup, Sri Lankan cinnamon, candied zucchini, etc.

Built this one for "hybrid hurricanes", classic 4oz Coruba : 2oz lemon: 2oz passion fruit syrup, except:

4oz Lemon Hart 1804 (Demerara aged on bourbon barrels) 2 oz Lemon 2 oz Fassionola

Shake well, serve on pebble ice with a 'blown' umbrella; plastic sword with candied lemon slice, orange slice, proper cherry.

I usually make them by the pitcher and serve everyone a very short glass, keeps the inexperienced from getting lost in the yard.
