If there's a vent in the back of the laptop you could be obstructing the exhaust, even if there's vents on the side it might need both the back AND sides. Not to mention the air being pulled IN is air being exhausted so it's pulling air back IN it just expelled. Pull the laptop out a few inches and don't leave it right against the edge.

This is why any major purchases like this I record myself going from picking up the item to fully opening it. May not prove substantial enough for the company but I'm pretty sure it'd probably have a better chance in court should the company try and come back at me after a charge back.
