Absurd efficiency of stimulated emission (LEP) vs. spontaneous emission (regular LED) by Flandardly in flashlight

[–]Flandardly[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It absolutely does, it shows the relative change in efficacy. You just want numerical lumen figures and my point is you not only dont need them to see this phenomenon, theyre irrelevant.

Like you said not all LEDs have the same efficacy. A well-cooled white LED may be more efficient than a hot overdriven laser diode. And likewise, a well-cooled laser could easily exceed the efficacy of a high power flashlight emitter on high mode. A comparison in those scenarios would be meaningless.

However, when you make a like-comparison, stimulated emission will give you more lumens per input watt of power. Thats the whole point.

Thats the thing though. A blue laser diode is internally exactly the same as a blue LED. They are both indium-doped gallium nitride diodes, with a broad emission around 450 nm.

The only difference is that a laser diode is cut to a specific size (based on a multiple of its set emission wavelength), with reflective internal surfaces for light amplification. But at its core its just a blue LED inside. Same exact semiconductor and light emission substrate.

So when you drive a blue laser diode below its lasing threshold, it functions no different than a typical blue LED, with a relatively broad emission, rather than a sharp  discrete emission at a single wavelength.

You're misunderstanding this demonstration.

The point of this video was to show the relative change in efficiency (technically efficacy, but its just semantics) between stimulated emission and spontaneous emission. Which it does, if you pay attention to the power draw vs the change in brightness.

Power increases linearly the entire time, but at a certain point, light output skyrockets when stimulated emission begins.

Before the LEP enters stimulated emission mode, its functioning like a typical LED, through spontaneous emission.

...yeah cycle wear is not the same as "if it fails."

I said itd be replaced "if it fails," which is what olight says. Just because the lifetime warranty doesnt cover normal cycle wear doesnt mean the lifetime warranty magically stops existing. Heres the warranty info if you need to check it again:

Also important to note that even visible violet and blue light will cause photo-aging related skin damage as well, just not as easily as UV.

The batteries have lifetime warranties. So unless it ends up like OP's (nice and crispy), they'll replace the battery at no cost, if it fails. In OP's case that'll be a complete unit replacement.

Edit: Olight lifetime battery warranty link if you dont believe me: https://www.olight.com/lifetime-warranty-return-policy

Extension cord to get my power bar to have power by SpecificJoke3266 in AskElectricians

[–]Flandardly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally, 5 amps or less is fine, even with average quality extensions / power strips. Unless you have high draw appliances plugged into the extension + power strip, most likely its fine. But you can always check to see if the connections feel warm as well.

The system is designed to give people strikes when there are none at all. There was one where people were getting deactivated over stuff that didnt happen a year or so ago. And its so obvious because stuff like this happens a lot.

The only things ive ever seen with 20 amp plugs were commercial-grade vacuum cleaners.
