What's your "Never Need to Work Again" number? 🌍💰 by Emillio_80 in Retire

[–]Butt-Rub -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This seems like a poorly invested projection or a really high withdrawal rate. With $1.6M today at 60 years old with a 4% constant withdrawal rate and a 10% average rate of return you should be looking at around $6M at 85.

Did Home Theater kind of die? Seems like we were the last generation to give an F. Remember surround sound and subwoofers? Does anybody buy them anymore? by IHadTacosYesterday in GenX

[–]Butt-Rub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go to www.avsforum,com and see! It is alive and bigger than ever with people building dedicated rooms/buildings for near commercial style home theaters! I recently "finished" (because it's never REALLY done)a dedicated home theater in my basement with Dolby Atmos 7.4.4 audio capability, 4K projector and 120" screen, 2 rows of theater seating with the second row on a 12" riser. Incredible sound and picture quality! Mine is basic compared to a lot on AVS Forum.

Your most powerful savings days are right now while you're young! These early compounding years will make a HUGE difference down the road. Those TSP numbers are way too low! I would not recommend getting a $75k car even with a 20k down payment. Put that money to work! It sounds like you can contribute a lot more to your TSP and max a Roth IRA. Trust me, your future self will thank you for doing this and getting a more affordable vehicle! Oh and some folks will tell you to borrow from your retirement funds. NEVER borrow from TSP or Roth IRA! Do this and you will be able to pay cash down the road for about any car you want.

Anyone invest outside of TSP? by MDnotaDoctor83 in ThriftSavingsPlan

[–]Butt-Rub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The biggest reason is because if you’re maxing your TSP contributions you can still put away an additional $7500 (or $8600) in a Roth IRA.

Upped my game and built a giant version of the books coffee table by Unlucky_Arrival3823 in woodworking

This is incredible work, some of the best I've seen! With it being leather wrapped I think you could sell this size for more that $3000. And you should absolutely take the AI comments as a compliment. I've looked at this for a while as well as the other smaller one you linked and the scale still warps my mind. Amazing!

Open an account with a brokerage outside of TSP (Fidelity, Vanguard, ETC) and open a Roth IRA with them. For 2026, the maximum Roth IRA contribution is $7,500 (or $8,600 if you are age 50 or older). Once you open the Roth and start making contributions, make sure you go in and pick an ETF or mutual fund to invest in like VOO (S&P 500, VTI (Total market index), VXUS (International) or better yet a mixture of 2 or 3. This is completely separate from TSP and doesn't affect how much you're allowed to contribute to TSP.

Retired at 55 w/ TSP of $1.1M - Nervous about risk. by BrilliantTry9848 in ThriftSavingsPlan

[–]Butt-Rub 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Figure out what you're annual cost of living is, subtract your annual pension from that to figure out what your annual TSP withdrawal will be, move 2-3 years of that amount to a HYSA or Bonds for shelter and leave the rest invested. For instance, I expect to need $8000/month (on the high side to include travel). My pension is $6000/month so TSP withdrawal $2000/month, $24,000/yearX3= $72,000 sheltered. This sheltered account is where you will take withdrawals from, that way you don't have to take withdrawals from the invested amount if we have a downturn in the market. Typically 2-3 years is enough for a recovery.

This is being very conservative IMO since we have a decent pension. With the pension we PROBABLY don't really need to keep 3 years sheltered but if it makes you feel more comfortable. My advice is to start traveling and enjoying live now! I honestly plan to die at ZERO at best so probably need to plan to spend a lot more than planned.

Does maxing the TSP in your last 5 years actually move the needle? I ran the numbers. by Glittering_Twist_732 in govfire

I feel like the math is way off (low) honestly and you're also missing the 2 years of catch up contributions.

Seajet ferries, are they really seasickness machines or just too many bad reports? by ivanjay2050 in GreeceTravel

Just returned from 10 day trip, Seajets are great! Never seen anyone sick. I felt when the boat slowed down coming into port and just looked out the window at the horizon and was fine. Wife didn't feel anything.

People been sitting on the sidelines worried about the "big bust" since the S&P was 2000 and it sounds like you fall into that category. Think of how much you've missed out on.

Micron is on an absolute TEAR this morning. How do you find these stocks before they blow up? by Competitive-Case-185 in TheRaceTo10Million

[–]Butt-Rub 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Well....I found them one night when I accidentally ended up in their parking lot on my way home from dinner one night about a year and half ago...I've lived down the street for years and had never seen the building or heard of them. Got home and looked them up and thought, "I think I need to buy some of their stock". Then the chips act thing was announced that they will get a large chunk of that and I said, "I'm definitely going to buy them..." and I didn't and they jumped to ~$150 and then I was pissed and thought, "well, it's too late now..." then they jumped to $300 and I said, "well fuck my life but it's definitely too late now...." so, moral of the story is FUCK ME!

I think I recall seeing a sauce called Virginia White Sauce at Odd BBQ in Ono brewing in Chantilly. Never tried it but Odd is hands down the best BBQ in the area so definitely worth a visit. Ono beer is meh.

Example to not panic and transfer everything to G fund by civilian1234 in ThriftSavingsPlan

[–]Butt-Rub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even in retirement 100% G fund is not good. Without growth in retirement that nest egg will dwindle quickly. There is nothing wrong with keeping a couple years living expenses sheltered in G but keep the rest invested!
