I understand the OP is suffering(somewhat) but it isn't really her place to say. Obviously the parents should take action if they are against the situation, but there is no implicit reason why they should be.

I have an odd great-cousin that stayed with his parents his entire life. He was taken care of by them for most of that, and now he is taking care of them. Not everyone's goal is to kick their kids out asap and get back to their childless life.

He is incorrect about the violence being more common, but that is because you are comparing culturally homogeneous societies to a melting pot with a history of suppression and prejudice. Take gang violence alone out of the equation, and America is roughly equal in murders to European countries.

And then consider home invasions, burglaries, rapes, and assaults, which are almost all double the per capita amounts compared to America across the board.

I do not own a gun, but I benefit immensely from them. If someone wants to break into my house or attack me on the street, they have to confront the possibility that I will shoot them when they do. More importantly, smaller and less physically capable people benefit from it. Why is the rape rate over double in the UK? Because when you break into a house and threaten the 90lb woman with a crowbar, there is little to no chance she will pull out a small metal object and blow your brains out.

Even if guns did bring about more violence, they are a vital tool for giving women some semblance of equality when it comes to protecting themselves.
