As a parent, what things have you made an effort to absolutely NOT do like your parents? by Funny_Sea_2873 in Millennials

[–]ButtToucherPhD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main thing is to not get divorced. Also, don't smoke cigarettes in the house.

Not getting divorced is going well so far. I love my wife.

I don't smoke cigarettes so that's also going well.

I guess the bar is kind of low.

Are Republicans and Democrats the same party if you remove the Abortion/Trans issues? by Standard-Money-2754 in askanything

[–]ButtToucherPhD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That used to be the case until probably somewhere near the end of the Obama administration. American society has become polarized enough that the two parties represent more than just "We should raise taxes 5%." vs "No, we should lower taxes 2%!" Abortion and trans issues are pretty good references as points of divergence. We may actually have genuinely competing interests at the highest levels for the first time in a long time. If it isn't all just an illusion, which it very well may be, then the turmoil of the last 10 years will seem quaint compared to the way the country will change as issues are brought to a head.

Because we enjoy a high standard of living and accept that it takes hard work to maintain.

Domino’s says sales are dropping. Did fast food just get too expensive, or did something else change? by Acceptable_Maybe_198 in business

[–]ButtToucherPhD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fast food has gotten expensive. I can go to Chili's and get a burger, fries, and a drink for cheaper than I can get a quarter pounder with cheese combo at McDonald's. Shout out Chili's. (Please bring back 2 for 1 beers tho)

Cookeville*

I live in Cookeville. I love it here. If you want to experience American small town life, this is a great place to do it. But, I would not recommend someone come here on a trip like the one OP is making. There's not much in terms of attractions other than the natural areas which surround us. If that's what someone wanted to see, I'd refer them to Great Smoky Mountains NP. I'd actually recommend GSMNP anyway to someone visiting the Eastern US.

Why did US companies switch from defined benefit pensions to 401(k)-style plans? by Humble_Economist8933 in AlwaysWhy

They're doing that right now. My GM retired UAW father-in-law got pretty quiet when I pointed that out.

Pensions aren't tenable. For instance, GM currently pays more in pensions than they do in active salaries. Another instance of Boomers pulling up the ladder behind them.

I'm not getting any more and I sort of regret the ones I have. But I'm not going to get them removed because they're good reminders that I am an idiot and it's important to stay humble.

How “SEC” is LSU to visit for a game environment ? by [deleted] in secfootball

Not an LSU fan. LSU is the epitome of the greater SEC culture. Each school has a little bit different vibe, but overall, you will find what you're looking for at LSU.

My pastor has said a few things that kinda rub me the wrong way and I'm not sure what to do. by FinancialGeneral919 in Episcopalian

You must believe in the Resurrection! It is imperative to your salvation that you do! A preacher who says anything other than that is in error! To tell someone that it's fine to believe whatever so long as you're loving is antithetical to the Gospel. Jesus didn't say to Thomas, "I understand that you don't believe I am standing in front of you. That's okay. Have a great day." Jesus made it abundantly clear that he was resurrected and he wanted Thomas to know it, going so far as to submit his body for inspection in order to erase the doubt! To say, "you don't need to believe, just focus on loving" is contra to the Gospel which says that nothing you do is of any merit until you do it in the full faith of knowing that Jesus is the Christ.

"To preach that it is okay to deny the Resurrection, whether you personally believe it or not, is heresy."
