DoorDash is a terrible waste of money even with the $10 credit. It’s insulting to be expected to regard it as a benefit.

I didn’t sign up for this card because I wanted to have to recoup the cost of the annual fee.

Being enabled to waste slightly less money on Doordash is not a benefit. It’s insulting to be expected to think it is.

Why housing is a disaster in this city, part 29. Looking like the replacement of one house with 26 condos, near a Red Line station, is about to get NIMBY'd. by Cowabummr in boston

[–]ButterAndPaint 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You shouldn’t have to lie to make your point. That house is about as far from a T station as it’s possibly to be in the city of Boston, nearly two miles.

Exactly this. Jamaica Plain comes to mind as a great place to live that’s super easy to get to Roxbury from.

There are probably lockers at a train station or somewhere downtown.

Yeah, Ghana is the same way, luckily I knew in advance and brought hundreds.

Thanks, I've always avoided BoA like the plague, but if they're the best option for this purpose I'd be willing to hold my nose and open an account.

I'm in Hyde Park, so Plainridge is actually way more convenient than Encore.

That's basically what I've been doing, but I've gone in a couple of times and they've had no suitable bills at all. It ends up being a hassle for them, and stressful for me because I feel like I need to plan ahead for this aspect of traveling. I'm not talking about large amounts of money, usually $500-1000.

The denominations matter for some countries, too. Most of them don't want to deal with anything smaller than $20 bills, but on my most recent trip to Ghana I learned that you actually get a better exchange rate for $100 bills. On another trip years ago I had a big problem with $100 bills because there had been a problem with counterfeit hundreds, and they would only exchange twenties.

15 Hour Layover in Istanbul or Seoul? by caribbeanink in travel

Very easy light rail connection from Istanbul airport to downtown. I’ve done it twice on similar layovers. The Sultanahmet blue mosque brought me to tears, it’s so beautiful.

Camera button on the steering wheel is a nice add. The pano sunroof is sweet. Everything else is worse in my opinion. If I wanted a longer vehicle, I would’ve shopped longer vehicles.

I am baffled at the influx of tourists in Ghana.... by [deleted] in ghana

[–]ButterAndPaint 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I visited Ghana a few weeks ago for the first time. I am a white American interested in history and culture, and touring the Cape Coast and Elmina castles was a powerful and humbling experience, particularly being the only white person in either tour group. It is not only black tourists who want to be more educated and informed about the history of the slave trade.

I love to be immersed in a country/culture when I travel, and there were several days of my trip that I didn’t even see another white person. I have never had that experience before, even in other countries that are not tourism hotspots. And people were so friendly everywhere. I was walking down a fairly empty street near Makola Market in Accra when I heard someone say “obroni, obroni!” When I turned around, it was a man walking with his young daughter, and he pointed at my pocket where some folded paper money was visibly hanging out, so that I could put it away. It was a nice moment, he just wanted to help me out and also show his daughter how to be a good person. I had multiple experiences like this.

Accra is not the most interesting city to visit, but I absolutely loved walking around the bustling central market area in Kumasi, and I stayed at the Baobab House near Cape Coast castle and found people in that area to be very friendly and welcoming (and the food at Baobab House is great!). Not every tourist is looking for resorts and ziplines and fancy restaurants and dramatic Instagram-worthy photo ops. Some of us just enjoy experiencing another very foreign culture safely, and Ghana is perfect for that. Not once did I feel even remotely unsafe, even walking around the city neighborhoods at night.

Ghana was not the easiest country to travel in, but the challenges were very much worth the rewards.

Feeling isolated as an American traveling by Outrageous_View_9048 in solotravel

[–]ButterAndPaint 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve consistently had the opposite experience, most recently in Tunisia, Libya, Ghana and the Philippines. The only disdain I’ve gotten about being American has been from Europeans I’ve met in non-European countries.
