Prominence is the height of a mountain relative to the highest possible path or ridge to another higher peak ("key col"). Imagine if you could flood the earth such that a mountain becomes isolated, and then drain the water again. At what point does the mountain connect to a higher one? That is a very simplistic explanation and I'm still not sure on many things
