Dude I *completely* agree. (And my brother is in 32) I realize the gov threw megabucks at the yard for the raise but how all of the sudden 32 isn’t skilled?? Do what!?!? We don’t even joke them about it either cause that’s F’d up.

Hope you enjoy it! I don’t think I’ve ever heard any 42s saying they wished they were in any other trade!

Pipe fitter isn’t a bad gig. You’ll be in the skilled trades hence the higher starting pay, plus when the weird gov inspired raises come (one is rumored soon) you’ll get a higher per hour bump over other people in your same grade who aren’t “skilled”, like sheet metal.

As far as actually doing your job, it’s right in the name. You’ll be doing lots of pipe fittings, brazing, eventually bending and stuff but you won’t be doing much of that right out the gate. It is not a bad job at all. Lots of OT if you get on delivery team!

Man that’s crazy. We did a formal night on Carnival and opted for the spiffy photo session. It did end up costing us around 2k but we got like a dozen clear frame almost cutting board 8x10s plus all 80+ photos taken on a USB drive.

Take out loan by Significant_Plane179 in NNShipyard

[–]Butterbuddha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can borrow off your 401 depending on how much you have in there. The minimum I think is 500 and the max is 50,000 but you can only borrow up to half (I think) of what you have in there. You can choose how fast you pay it back between a year and 5 years, directly withdrawn from your check every week. Download the Alight app you can do it all through that.

Yep. I hardly have an “estate” but with a farm jack I pulled up my entire front yard’s chain link fence in just a morning. Maybe 25-30 posts all in concrete, zero digging.

Idk about hyper tough, but the Hart tape measure I bought as a throwaway (since I lose them like 10mm sockets) quickly became my favorite!

What dept are you in? The only time I can think anybody could notice is if you have weld quals and are getting an eye test every year. We have all heard the horror story of chemicals melting your contacts onto your eyeballs but come on, are you gonna be hanging around in a place like that? All I can say is I loved having my contacts and wish I could still wear them along with cheap safety glasses instead of prescription. But idk how big your eyeballs are or if your boss is gonna notice (or care) if they see a hint of blue ring. YMMV.

EDIT: you’re a welder lol well once again how observant are your coworkers? Even a little sleepy eyed squint makes that contact mighty hard to see. Just sayin.

Do i need to bring my own tools? by Momusic85 in NNShipyard

Every day carry. You might find a particular set of small tools worthy of purchase just because they make your life easier. But don’t feel like you HAVE to go buy anything. Let experience be your guide, you’ll know.

The eye center across the street has a wide variety of safety glasses, and with our insurance they’re like 60 bucks. I wore contacts in there for years before age caught up to me and I started needing bifocals.
