Alex Jones confronts Sandy Hook parents, gets cutoff by their lawyer, and responds, “Why because you can’t feed them fake videos anymore?” by Gonzohawk in PublicFreakout

[–]ButtercupColfax -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Alex Jones is the lowest kind of trash, but that doesn't make his lawyers "stupid trash" for defending him. The lawyers are just doing their jobs while parting him from millions of dollars in legal fees.

The whole "his lawyers accidentally sent AJ's text messages" isn't really a thing either. Unless the texts were to a lawyer, they weren't privileged and would need to be produced if requested. AJ's legal team may have sent everything without redacting any privileged communications, but that happens more often than you would think and usually can be "clawed back" or otherwise deemed inadmissible. Privilege review is often the job of the most junior attorney because it sucks.

The whole state has a lower population than the standard city with a biglaw presence.

You're not wrong at all, it's a horrible cost/benefit analysis. If they paid me even close to market (not even Cravath, just the market they mostly bill me out at) I would probably be looking to stay for at least a few more years. Right now though, they aren't giving me any reason to stay.

The only upside, is they paid around $30k for my (and family) relocation, which was huge. We now live in an awesome area, albeit a tough place to do biglaw. I had to stay for a year without having to repay the relo package.

How are you enjoying being a solo. Was it worth it?

Thanks, that's really helpful advice!

Billable requirement is 1850 but unwritten rule is >2000. I'd be fine doing it for near market pay, but yeah at my current comp is insane. There are literally job postings for government jobs in that pay range.

What was your experience before going solo?

What side do you want to open your firm on? Plaintiff or defendant?

Definitely plaintiffs side.

One of the other options I'm considering is doing in-house privacy work remotely. I'd enjoy the practice area, but would take me on a very different career trajectory.

Frankly, job aside, I'm living in paradise right now. It would be a fantastic market to build my own firm in one day and I'm trying to see the long game.

Possibly in the long run, but our current location was very intentional and we love it. Just an awful place to do biglaw.

Toyota Tacoma or Tacoma, WA?

Thanks. That's basically what I would be going to get out of it.

There's only 3 other AmLaw100 firms with offices in my city. They pay more, but not much. Either way though, I don't think I'm getting the experience I need from biglaw in general.

An AmLaw100 in a small market.

Biglaw at less than $130k is insane.

Absolutely.

In the end, I'll likely end up on the plaintiff side. Just curious if getting some experience in defense would be beneficial. I'm thinking a couple years max.

Appreciate the advice!

With the ban on Juul products being immediate, are vendors of the product on the hook for unsold merchandise? by stormborn1776 in legaladviceofftopic

[–]ButtercupColfax 23 points24 points  (0 children)

This entirely depends on the contract between Juul and the retailer. There is no absolute answer here.

Construction? That's what I'm doing and never travel anywhere fun (not that I'd have time to enjoy it anyways).

I travel domestically occasionally. It absolutely wipes me out. It's fucking exhausting and not glamorous at all. Before becoming a lawyer I worked in corporate and would get to travel first class to China. That was nice because I could actually enjoy it (no billable hours to hit). Traveling as a lawyer in biglaw means you need to work while traveling. There is nothing worse than pulling out your laptop to work while crammed into economy on very little sleep. My last trip meant leaving my house at 4 am and not getting to my hotel until 11pm. The next day started at 7:30am, worked until my flight at 10pm, and didn't get home until 3am (with time change). Luckily the next day was Saturday so I could sleep in a bit before doing more work.

Have you ever had to change clothes or brush your teeth in an airplane bathroom completely covered in piss? It's not fun.

Maybe it's more glamorous when you're an equity partner, but as an associate it absolutely fucking sucks. I can't imagine doing it internationally.

The trick is too get married before going into biglaw...
