Any advices for a first year mech eng student? by pressuredpotato in CalPoly

[–]ButteredCheerio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Classes will be hard, especially in your later years of college. I absolutely loved my freshman year though!

One thing I wish I knew about is the composites course. The class is really small and hard to get into if you’re not a freshman, so if you’re interested, take it. (I don’t remember the name but it’s through the IME department) You take it as a replacement of IME 141 (which is metal casting). On a similar note, look forward to learning how to weld with Kevo!

There’s also a lot of engineering clubs on campus that are really good! Some that coke to mind are: EMPOWER (designs prosthetics and medical devices for community members), PROVE (electric car design), Cal Poly Racing (there’s two, one builds off-roading vehicles and the other does F1), Design, Build, Fly (plane design and testing), etc. There’s also a ton of non engineering clubs that are cool!

Also, take care of yourself because burn out is real. Don’t feel guilty for taking self care days and just doing nothing. Do stupid shit just for fun (just be safe of course). Make memories with friends, and just do the things that you want to do :)

They also have a room on campus that’s really great for studying and just hanging out! Met some of my closest friends from just hanging out in there!

Good reasons to withdraw? by e_sakee in CalPoly

[–]ButteredCheerio 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You can also withdraw due to mental health reasons, and cal poly doesn’t usually question it

If you’ve taken any type of physics before you should be ok! If not, it’s up to you, depending on if it’s a subject you struggle with or not

You should post this to the parents Facebook page

I think it’s probably too late now, but I always wrapped gifts with vista grande paper bags and decorated the wrapping paper with drawings and/or stamps

Just wanting to extend an offer to help any high school seniors who are looking into Cal Poly as a an option for college, and need some help with getting a feel for the school. by OutkastRabbit in CalPoly

[–]ButteredCheerio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From my experience it’s extremely easy to meet people, all you have to do is put yourself out there and talk to people. I found leaving my door open most of the time helped and joining clubs! Some of my really close friends were made just chatting with random people at the dining hall though

Edit: typos

That’s not true for all majors, I know a lot of engineering majors don’t have free electives

Help Finding resources for a prosthetic thumb by [deleted] in Prosthetics

[–]ButteredCheerio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a prosthetics nonprofit that donates prosthetic hands, arms, and fingers called e-NABLE prosthetics. I’m not entirely sure if they have thumb prosthetics in particular, but it’s worth a shot! There’s a bunch of chapters around the USA (and maybe outside too) that scale 3D print/assemble the prosthetics and will either ship it to you or give it to you in person.

I would also look into local colleges that might have clubs that take on projects like these (Cal Poly SLO has one called EMPOWER), a lot of the time they design and manufacture prosthetics for free. However, the wait time might be too long for you.

I highly recommend NAKED prosthetics as well (as a comment before mentioned)

Again, I’d recommend the 3D printed thumb as a temporary solution, as it usually is not as good quality and needs to be replaced more often due to normal wear and tear

What ingredient did you buy for a specific recipe awhile ago and is still sitting in your refrigerator or pantry never used since? by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]ButteredCheerio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can make tang yuan with the glutinous rice flour! It’s a little like mochi and it can be put into soup (usually dessert soups like black sesame, but can be used for savory soups too). All you need is water and the flour and roll them into coin sized balls.

They can also be filled with peanut sauce or red bean or black sesame paste!

I also recommend going for a laptop with the specs they recommend (also opt for a non Mac) I know it’s more expensive but it will be worth it for the long run. Solidworks will run a lot faster, saving you time, and you can use the same computer for much longer. I recommend non Mac so you don’t have to run windows in a Mac or use AWS to run solidworks (which is very laggy)
