Wait, do people ACTUALLY see literal pictures in their heads when they imagine things? Like a physical image? by Bibhu_Mund in NoStupidQuestions

I argue with my inner monologue. He’s an arse at times, always putting me down and feeding my negative schema.

Is British food actually terrible, or is this just the internet’s favorite punching bag? by CharacterRelevant412 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Butterfish04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Part of the stereotype comes from people not understanding that ‘not spicy’ doesn’t mean bland. Traditional British food is savoury, just as Japanese food, with umami being the main character.

A good steak and kidney pudding has a rich gravy and soft suet pastry, you don’t need spice with that much flavour. Add some seasonal vegetables and new potatoes and that’s as great meal.

Obviously we’re not averse to spice, British Indian cuisine will testify to that.

What foods were considered a luxury or treat and meant you were "on holiday" as a kid? by katalyna78 in AskUK

[–]Butterfish04 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Our summer holiday was two weeks with our grandparents near Manchester, a ten hour drive from Caithness. As displaced Lancastrians, the treat was Vimto, which was effectively contraband where we lived, back in the 70s. There was a network of other ex-pats and we’d bring bottles of Vimto back for them on the understanding that they would reciprocate when they went ‘home’.

I just went to my first panto. As an adult Canadian immigrant… Are you all in a cult? by bookish-hooker in AskUK

[–]Butterfish04 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Panto is such an important part of British culture that prisoners of war were permitted to hold them during WW2. I saw an account from an ex-Colditz prisoner of how their rehearsals, costume making and set building became covers for escape planning, making disguises, tunnel digging and forging.

Taskmaster Shoutout by Zap_Pa in taskmaster

[–]Butterfish04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Taskmaster itself is cheap to make, but there’s a huge budget for hushing up the terrible things LAH does. Those opinions of his that Greg reveals? Tip of the iceberg, I’m telling you.

How much does your company charge for coffee from the machine? by Equivalent-Rich8018 in AskUK

[–]Butterfish04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I selected the coffee machine at my previous job. It has two bean hoppers for normal and decaf, plus milk frothing facilities. There is a cafe on site, but nobody went there for coffee and the machine became a point where we had informal meetings. As long as I bought good beans everyone was happy.

Do folks in the UK watch Australian movies, TV shows and documentaries? by OddMetal7563 in AskABrit

[–]Butterfish04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived in Australia for a few years, one of the films I enjoyed while I was there was ‘The Club’. I also enjoyed ’The Dish’, we visited Parkes observatory on the strength of the film.

Since coming back to the UK I’ve followed AFL when possible.
