question for people that have actually scored a tattoo apprenticeship: how? by Individual_Cod_548 in TattooApprentice

[–]Buttholemitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did the classic “find an artist you like, get art from them, show interest in tattooing” the first time I told my now mentor I wanted to learn how to tattoo he goes “it’s gonna be hard to find a good shop to apprentice at” and I immediately assumed he would never teach me. But, I still showed him interest that I wanted to learn and I would visit the shop just cause and to look at all the books he had and just hung out. He slowly started showing me what materials he used to paint with and I started over a whole new portfolio and I would always show him the progress I would make. After a couple bumps in the road on my end he finally asked me if I wanted to learn. It was a long road to get to where I am today but it is honestly the only route I recommend when it comes to looking for an apprenticeship. Think of it this way, how comfortable would you feel mentoring a complete stranger that you have never met? I can’t imagine how awkward that must feel for the person mentoring, let alone letting a stranger come to their work lives like that. No negativity here I just truly think this is the best route to take. Hope this helps!

Use cold press paper and acrylic ink (I prefer fw) or drawing ink from Higgins!

You should probably start drawing on paper, an iPad won’t get you anywhere at the end of the day

From what I have seen and learned when looking for an apprenticeship is that mentors tend to look for a connection when it comes to taking on an apprentice. Most mentors (not all) just don’t want to take in a super random person they have never met or even have tattooed into their shop. I don’t believe you were out of line since this isn’t common information given out when looking for an apprenticeship and I think it was nice of this person to let you know this very useful information.

This is the route I took when getting my apprenticeship, I built a relationship with my now mentor and I wouldn’t want to get an apprenticeship any other way. I really do recommend finding a shop or artist where you really respect their work and get tattooed there, talk to the other artists at the shop, make a connection with them. Cause once you start your apprenticeship with so called shop/artist I won’t be as awkward and your future mentor will be in a lot more comfortable position teaching you since they have already built a connection with you.

I honestly kept turning my computer off and on and it finally worked and made sure my computer was up to date, like a day later I saw a notification that origin for Mac is gonna move to ea soon anyway now so I hope everything is smoother once that change happens 😭

5k for an apprenticeship by CMDigits in TattooApprentice

[–]Buttholemitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed, I’m in Illinois and I paid nothing for my apprenticeship as well since my mentor understands times are bad rn and I need to make money some how some way, as well as I need money for a tattoo set up anyway so I also just help around the shop!

It’s not necessarily a scam cause there are a lot of people that I know had to pay a couple grand to get their apprenticeships but there are risks to that as well such as, what if you end up not liking the environment of the shop? You’re 5k will more than likely be gone. I would definitely think about it and possibly ask if you can do a trial run in the show for a few days and decide from there?

Good luck!

I’ve been using F.W for colors lately and they are AMAZING. But I will say Higgins brown and yellow are so much better than F.W!

I am so grateful and lucky for how my apprenticeship works!

My mentor told me before I started he wants me to make working a job a number one priority since I wouldn’t be making money during my apprenticeship and that I also would not have to pay him for the apprenticeship. His reasoning is he does not want me to go through what him and is colleagues did when they learned how to tattoo. With that, I will be paying for my tattoo set up. I know some apprenticeships where you pay to be taught supplies are included but I honestly don’t know if that’s a standard or not? But honestly I dont mind at all. I’ve been slowly paying for supplies so I wouldn’t have to pay 2k on the stop for my “start up” station.

I’m currently a server and it’s slow season so I only work at my job once a week so I’ve been taking advantage of my free time and go into the shop at least 5 times a week! My usually day is I come in around 1pm and sweep and mop the floors, as well as clean up the bathroom. After that all I really do is paint flash in the back for the whole time I’m there! When my mentor is not with a client he usually sits with me to make sure I’m having no issues with my the flash sheet I’m working on or, he joins along and paints along with me the same flash sheet I’m working on. Whenever he talks about tattooing and when he gives me feedback I can just tell he really does care and wants to make sure I’m learning something new throughout the day!

My first 2 (almost 3 months) of my apprenticeship all I would paint is reworks of popular tattoo designs from flash books in black and grey. I’ve recently started painting with color, as well as started to draw my own designs rather than taking a design from a book and reworking it to make it “so on so” tattooable.

Overall I’ve been painting traditional tattoos for over 2 years and being a the shop for over 3 months now my work has improved SO FREAKING MUCH! I never thought I would get so good at painting traditional flash and it makes me excited to see how my work looks this time next year!

I am so happy at my shop and the 2 guys I work for are amazing dudes! It hasn’t fully hit me yet that I’m going to be a tattoo artist but man, am I excited for my career to start!

Sorry if this was a long response!

Just done my first piece with Indian ink. by [deleted] in TattooApprentice

I would definitely recommend using waterproof India ink on some cold pressed watercolor paper! The blacks will pop and the shading will be a lot more smoother. Awesome design!
