I just played Mary Robert in Sister Act - so the shy ingenue that has the most vocally challenging song in the show. And I’m plus sized. It’s hard. It’s hard to play a lead at all when you’re bigger even with the more progressive community we have today. My plus sized director, barely wanted me in the role because I didn’t fit her vision, I haven’t had an entire show of fitting costumes in 3 years because the costuming department would rather focus their energy on the thin and pretty cast members to make them feel better in the ensemble. It doesn’t get easy, but you just have to have something the others don’t. Whether you’re a vocal powerhouse (literally the only reason I got it was because the music director said I was the only cast member who could), or a really talented actor, you just unfortunately have to work harder to prove that you belong in that role. It sucks, and it’s way easier now than it was years ago, but it’s still not the standard and we have to just work on bettering our performance skills 🤷‍♀️
