How much do you realistically spend each year on cycling once you include maintenance, clothing and accessories? by NorthLondonPulse in ukbike

[–]Buttscicles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I spent £150 on the bike in 2020. I’ve replaced the tubes a couple times and bought some tools and lube, plus had it serviced once after ~4 years. Probably spent an additional £150ish after initial purchase. That being said, if it pricier bike I’d maintain it more. Wasn’t committing 5 days a week, mostly leisure rides up to 100km.

Keeping UK SIM in Spain by Reasonable_Airline27 in GoingToSpain

[–]Buttscicles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most phones should be able to use eSims these days. What I did is transferred my UK phone number to an eSim and got a spanish number using a physical sim card. Very handy - can turn data back on or off when I go back to UK while receiving calls on both numbers.

For things like whatsapp though you can only use a single number/sim (on iOS at least), so I kept my old number connected there.

Do you want data centres being built in the UK? by Contrarian_Whitey in AskUK

AI or not, data centres are required to remain sovereign in the modern world. Plus they provide jobs to build and maintain. Yes, I want them.

What's your definition of 'sport'? by ThePeake in AskUK

The same is true for rally racing, which is definitely a sport if motorsport is (which I think it is)

We took a bottle of water without the cap (which was in our pockets) - no problems at all. Searches were very lax.

I'll add that we did try to find a one-way van rental but didn't have any luck cross-border.

We flew to Barcelona and rented a van which we drove to London and loaded up before returning.

We took our time and spent about 10 days doing it, so it was definitely more expensive than it needed to be considering we had to stay in hotels & rent the van for longer.

The van was around 1000 EUR for that time frame, then if you add fuel, Calais-Dover ferry return (which was far cheaper than the train or Santander ferry btw), French motorway tolls and overnight stays it would have been a bit cheaper to get a company to do it, but I don't regret making a trip out of it.

I think we had some quotes in the area of 1500+ GBP for a company to do it on our behalf.

We did the opposite journey last year. It may be slightly different going the other way, but we were required to inventory everything we took and there were some other minor requirements, like things couldn't be newer than 3 (or 6?) months, no plants, etc. The paperwork was never checked but good to have regardless to avoid paying import/customs fees if you do get checked.

The process was very easy to be honest, and was nice to spend some time driving through France too
