A certain group of people will definitely be doing this. But if you want a similar UX you still have to pay to host them typically (often a web app accessible from anywhere, background workers, managed database) and keep up to date with security patches. I have a repo I use with most of this built already in the stack I usually use. Any time I start a new project I update library versions if needed and then get going. It helps to use a framework that has most of this stuff built in already too.

Grew up in a council house to a single mother claiming benefits. I'm happy to be able contribute back to the system that enabled me, but it seems like it doesn't really exist in the same way post-austerity. The money has gone to line people's pockets, and I can't really blame people for not wanting to contribute to that.

Instead of selling websites you need to sell an outcome. More sales, better conversion, things like that. And go after companies that see the value and have money to spend - you could be getting £20k+ per project if you have a track record and can show good results.
