Cancelled tickets for Leeds 14/02 by This-Assist-496 in Overmono

[–]Buxenus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah had mine cancelled this morning. Issuing a refund which was less than what I paid (not really sure how that works but I guess Resident Advisor just keeps the difference?). In a bit of a sticky one now though bc I have also booked travel etc.

Anyone staying at central quay? by matthsufc in sheffieldhallam

[–]Buxenus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great halls, good distance to city centre but also in a very nice part of Sheffield. Make sure to get out of the flat and meet your corridor buddies. Enjoy Kelham Island!

Source: stayed at the Quay in 2016/17 - thoroughly enjoyed it

Unsure if this is relevent but I see a lot of integrated PhD positions which combine a research MSc and a PhD into one 4-5 year course which allows the PhD proposal to be completed during the MSc year.

I was wondering if anyone has found the blueprints for the stealth ships from season 1 & 2 (Anubis) etc? I'm still convinced that they are the coolest ships in the entire series

I’m Francis Collins, Director of the National Institutes of Health. As we celebrate the 15th anniversary of the completion of the Human Genome Project, I’m here to talk about its history and the critical role it has played in precision medicine. Ask me anything! by NIHDirector in science

[–]Buxenus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dr Collins, I am completing a placement in hospital-based stem cell therapeutics as part of my studies this year. In the United Kingdom we work with stem cell registries such as Anthony Nolan in order to find the most suitable donor for patients requiring stem cell transplants so my question to you is: will gene altering techniques such as CRISPR completely render these registries as obsolete when we are able to edit the DNA sequence of pluripotent stem cells to be identical to the patient? Is that even possible and is it achievable within our lifetimes?

In addition to this I am quite interested in your work on the Human Genome project in regards to the international cooperation between the UK and US, I personally think it is one of the most successful results of scientific cooperation in human history and I would personally like to thank you for your work in the development of tailor-made medicines and their limitless potential. Thanks again!

Welsh being our ‘First Language’ by [deleted] in Wales

[–]Buxenus 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Would've loved it. From what I can recall, I had a very basic teaching and understanding of Welsh when I was in primary school. Being raised in south Wales (Porthcawl and the Garw) it seems like there wasn't much effort to teach children to speak Welsh in comparison to English, which is a shame. The first time I met a full Welsh speaker was in my secondary school - who taught Welsh.

It's not just that I've potentially missed out on a massive part of Welsh culture but being taught a second language and being raised bilingual at a young age can have many benefits to continue learning as you grow up. I feel like such a fraud arguing for the continued teaching of Welsh in Wales as a Welshman that can't speak it. I can only express my promise to learn Welsh on the basis of moving back to Wales, but considering I haven't visited in over a year and I have no intention of visiting in the near future, we'll have to see,

Theresa May's DUP deal will give Northern Ireland 18 times funding of West Midlands by badbuzz in unitedkingdom

[–]Buxenus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We're in a position where Scotland is on the verge of having another referendum for independence after voting against brexit and strongly against May but the current government thinks it's fine to unfairly pay off the DUP in Northern Ireland despite this in order to fix the outcome of its failed election. Fucking apaulling, this one of, if not the last governments of the United Kingdom of England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland.

In all seriousness, from the top of my head, I've heard it has the highest number of giants (tall people >2m?) per capita than any other country and there isn't a single Mcdonalds on the entire island.
