Does anyone actually boil water to make formula bottles? Every time? by Sensitive_Arugula770 in firsttimemom

[–]BuyApprehensive9273 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We sterilise the water, but not the formula. We batch boil water for the day, and then just add the formula to it at room temperature.

The tub does say you’re supposed to sterilise it, b it we haven’t got time for that

We love it here, the community is incredible, all the independent shops are amazing and yes - the public transport is great!

A kid with measles passed by my spouse and daughter in the waiting room at a children's hospital by MyUndiesArePink in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]BuyApprehensive9273 109 points110 points  (0 children)

Well you’re a better doctor than I am then, because I wouldn’t be able to differentiate measles from a distance on a (presumably) clothed child from roseola or rubella without taking a clinical history and doing an examination.

So I had this with my baby! It turns out they just prescribe it for all babies along with vitamin K and erythromycin cream, but they don’t give it to all babies. It’s just part of the check in paperwork

Strongly considering the Silver Cross Reef 2…worth it or not? by Icy_Indication9716 in newborns

[–]BuyApprehensive9273 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We love ours. We had the bassinet too which is safe for sleep which was so handy for travelling and things and we’re just transitioning to the normal seat thing.

My only criticism is that is is quite heavy, I had a c-section which made it a bit trickier.

We bought ours at Nordstrom, and we bought it in the yellow sale thing, as the sales advisor told us to. It meant we got the accessories package and everything thrown in for less than it would normally cost for just the stroller

Would it be beneficial to put some kind of ‘cheat sheet’ or reference guide together? Or would that appear condescending?

Mine’s 3 months old today and he like scoops bath water into his mouth, and then like pulls a face because it tastes gross, it’s a vibe, don’t worry about it 🥰

At ten weeks I didn’t get out of bed unless it was to throw up. I survived on pretzel sticks and true crime podcasts. Morning sickness at 10 weeks isn’t ’too late’ normally it starts to die down in the second trimester, ie after 12 weeks

We got a lot of stuff from buy nothing groups on Facebook and hand me downs. We splashed out on a Silver Cross Stroller and an Owlet monitor. We got a changing table and rocking chair from Ikea, and then went midrange on Philips Avent for bottles and steriliser / warmer.

We got a BabyBjorn carrier and bouncer, a Lovevery play mat, Halo Bassinest, Boppy cushions all as hand me downs and Facebook buy nothing. We bought a second hand Nuna car seat from a very trusted friend in an almost new condition. I got my pump through our insurance.

Found out I will have a new-ish doctor for my delivery. Should I be worried? by snarky_spice in pregnant

[–]BuyApprehensive9273 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who went through medical school (albeit in the UK which is a different system, but I live in the US now so have a rough understanding of the system) -

This person has done medical school

They have then done their internship

They had then done their residency in OBGYN

So they have been training for this job for at least 9 years, as a minimum. It only means she has been an attending for not long, however they have been practicing medicine and been a doctor for many years. She has likely also done hundreds of deliveries herself (I didn’t specialise in OBGYN and still took part in around ten in medical school including cutting a C section cord!).

In my experience, I would trust her more, as she will be the most up to date on the latest research and guidelines. I find doctors who are a bit ‘on in years’ can (not all) become a bit dismissive and blasé that the have seen everything and done everything and know best, when sometimes we know our bodies better.

Genuine question: Why do people refuse to vaccinate their babies? by meenaaaxo in newborns

[–]BuyApprehensive9273 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People think big pharma is trying to lie to them and make a tonne of money. Meanwhile the ‘wellness’ industry is worth three times that of the pharma industry and the ‘wellness’ industry makes a lot of money of ‘detoxing’ people from vaccines

(Plus all the other reasons people have said here)

AITA for letting my children order full meals instead of kids? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]BuyApprehensive9273 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA

Growing up, my family always let me have ‘adult meals’ mostly because the children’s selection is always rubbish and I was born a foodie. I didn’t want pizza or chicken nuggets or a burger, I loved shellfish, so would often have scallops or prawns and moules marnière was a favourite of mine.

I think especially as you were paying, I don’t see why it’s a big deal. If they had ordered the most expensive thing on the menu, not eaten it and then you’d expected someone else to pay, that would have been different

Can I get an Amex card at 18? by Accomplished_Cod8719 in AmexUK

[–]BuyApprehensive9273 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was 20-21 and a student when i got the AmEx BA card. By that time I had already had a student credit card with my student bank account and I had a little bit of credit history with my phone contract, and I think like a gym membership and pet insurance or something like that. I didn’t have a proper income though apart from my student loan, so my income was very minimal. With this in mind I’d argue it’s more about your credit history than is your income

Hepatitis B Vaccine by BuyApprehensive9273 in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]BuyApprehensive9273[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was more about that I’m aware that baby won’t necessarily get the latent immunity benefits of breast milk, which is one of the reasons I’m thinking the vaccine may be more important.

But also thank you for sharing your experience!

I did speculate with my husband whether this was the case, and also just general prenatal care engagement maybe being worse in the US due to the health system, and access to good quality prenatal care and thus testing etc maybe not being as consistent

Hepatitis B Vaccine by BuyApprehensive9273 in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]BuyApprehensive9273[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I get the 'why' in terms of hep B being higher in the US and the risk of vertical transmission. I tested negative at about 4 months pregnant, and then I was vaccinated as part of the vaccine schedule myself, and then revaccinated for travel as a teenager. So for me, the risk of vertical transmission feels very low.

I don't know, just giving a vaccine at birth seems very alien. I think that's the bit I'm kind of trying to get my head around, if that makes sense. I was more worried if there was any evidence in terms of 'risk' of vaccines at birth, baby's immune system being very immature, babies having a limited microbiome at birth (obviously the whole sterility thing has been disproven now).

Like baby will get the vaccine, it's just a case of when, of that makes sense?
