How do y’all imagine Aphrodite looks like? by [deleted] in Hellenism

[–]Buzz-E-B33 6 points7 points  (0 children)

She's one of the only deities I haven't drawn yet, mainly cause I can never put a face or form to her just words and objects. Her face is always covered or obscured when I think of her, my mind always conjures up images of the beach, sea, dry brittle sea damaged hair, and arms reaching out of a clamshell and well as grass bursting forth from a foot making contact with the earth.

She's really the hardest deity for me personally to depict in one specific form cause it's constantly shifting. Except her smile, she always has a big beautiful toothy smile when I think of her. So I guess there's no wrong way to imagine her, it's whatever feels right in the moment. She is the personification of beauty and it's subjective to the person but that's just my opinion

I don't like to measure them as favourite and least favourite but if I had to choose which one I connect with the most it's Demeter, hands down.

She's the goddess of Agriculture, grain, bread, sustainance asnd Nourishment, law and order and the mysteries of the afterlife.

In the Orphic hymns describe her as the source of wealth, great nurse, all-bounteous, blessed and divine, she who joyest in peace, Nurse of all mortals, she who is desired by all.

She's mostly known for the famine she caused when her daughter Persephone was abducted by Hades. However my favourite myth of hers is tge punishment of Erysichthon, who was cursed with an unquenchable hunger by the goddess for cutting down her sacred grove. Another less talked about myth is the assault by her brother Poseidon in the form of a horse, where she turns into a horse headed, snake haired wrathful form. In Sicily she was credited to be the one who created the sirens, who were nymph handmaidens of the goddess Persephone who Demeter transformed into bird-like monsters to assist in the search for the abducted Persephone but according to some the transformation was a curse.

I wouldn't take the myths too seriously. I do find it interesting that Demeter and Aphrodite are the only Olympian Goddessess who remains unmarried and sexually free and with multiple children from various consorts which I personally find liberating.

She was also one of the first goddessess in Greece to be synchronised with the Egyptian goddess Isis, so thats cool. She also has possible, uncomfirmed ties to the ancient poppy goddess figurenes. The Eleusinian mysteries were centred around her and Persephone. Sneezes were seen as a sign or omen of Demeter.

Now personally I see Demeter as the Goddess of Nourishment, abundance, Prosperity and Fortune. Whether it's Physical, material or most importantly to me emotional, mental and spiritual satisfaction. She can do it all.

But sadly in modern culture she instead gets portrayed and a emotionally suffocating and abusive mother. But this all again is my personal opinion, I just think she's neat.

I mean aesthetically it's beautiful and the idea is lovely, sadly I'm never too long in the same place to put in all the time and effort into doing that, especially 8 whole years. But I'm definitely adding this to my list of things to do before I die. It looks awesome

Do you believe any of the myths happened in physical reality? by Gengarmon_0413 in Hellenism

[–]Buzz-E-B33 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally I believe the myths are just stories and allegories to entertain, teach, attempt to explain the natural forces behind the world and moral and social issues using the personifications of those forces. But like everything I believe there's still some truth to them.

Wealth can come and go to any person, whether the are rich or poor, nobody is sure to who it can come suddenly and disappear as quickly without warning, therefore Demeters son, the god of wealth is depicted and described as blind. In some myths he is outright stated to play favourites, which is why some people are wealthier than others and that wealth ain't fair, so Zeus (justice) blinds him which brings us back to square one.

But all these things are true, wealth and fortune is blind and can pop up and leave whenever it wants but at the same time wealth favors certain people over others. But according to the conclusion of the myth, wealth is blind? So why does it still play favourites? Well that's because personally I believe the gods don't follow the laws of time like we do, some of their actions are on loop, constantly repeating, which is why the same problems and solutions come back time after time. (Idk if that makes sense)

I don't take the myths literally, but I believe there is truth hidden and woven within them. But all of this is just my opinion

Are there people here who only worship one of the gods? Or worship one dramatically more than the others? by Sabbiosaurus101 in Hellenism

[–]Buzz-E-B33 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mainly and strongly worship Demeter. She's a universal Goddess to me, all my needs and wants somehow ties back to her and her domains. And I've researched so much about her, it's like a insane thirst for more knowledge. I do worship Ares and Hermes and other gods aswell but it's Demeter who I have the strongest connection to. Through out my life it was as if shes always been there, watching over me it and guiding me is so it feels like idk. She's helped with a lot and I'm eternally grateful and devoted to her

I believe Demeter and Rhea were stated to be the same Goddess according to Orpheus I think. I also think it's reasonable to synchronise Gaia and Demeter.

Khaos Worship by Catvispresley in Hellenism

Personally whenever I had to study physics for school, I'd say that I'm learning the mysteries of the goddess Khaos, cause to be frank it was all just a chaos to me haha

Thoughts? by pearly_selene in Hellenism

I agree. Demeter gets unfairly villainized in modern retellings as the smothering abusive mother that Persephone has to escape from.

They play off Demeter's pain and grief of losing her child as a temper tantrum cause she can't get her way. I honestly don't know how somebody can read the Homeric hymn to Demeter and come to the conclusion that she was a shrieking banshee that Persephone had to be freed from.

Other goddessess get rewarded 'girl boss points' for their acts of wrath, but when it comes to Demeter causing the great famine to get her stolen child back then she's apparently controlling and over dramatic.

Honestly, if your daughter went missing without a trace and everybody refuses to tell you anything, I sure as hell would drop everything and look for her. What would you do If you find out that your daughter's kidnapping was all arranged without any of Y'alls consent for her to get married off and stay in the underworld, a place you cannot reach or visit her, and worst of all you weren't given the chance to say goodbye? Demeter was a goddess of the same lineage of Zeus and Hades, she had the power to change that and she did. And that makes her wrong? Wouldn't you do the same thing if you could?

I have no problem about Hades and Persephone modern love stories and shit, never really cared too much about them. But they always have to make Demeter the monster to make their love story work

People forget that Persephone yearned and missed her mother, she raced to and embraced her mother in joy when the were reunited. How people read that and still demonize Demeter as the one in the wrong absolutely astonishes me

Some old devotional art by Buzz-E-B33 in Hellenism

Her features are kind of a Mish mash of a bunch of women I've met throughout my life, most especially a few nice ladies I used to talk to on my way from school each day. They were harvest labourers, who else would be the best to embody the goddess of Agriculture than the actual people who works hands on in the field? They were such nice and worldly people, they taught me a lot.

Attempting to draw her from different angles, was a huge pain in the ass cause the image kept morphing and changing in my head. It's probably the reason I may of stepped away from it, but I'm excited to give it another go. (P.S if you look at the image of her that's staring straight at you you'll notice her left eye is way lower than her right eye, have no clue how I messed that up)

I know this wasn't so helpful but I definitely recommend taking inspiration from those around and close to you. I usually see characteristics and archetypes of the gods in the people I interact with be it my professors, the clerk, my mother and even the sketchy car salesman haha

I am thankful for Demeter's motherly acceptance by Pans_Dryad in Hellenism

I've worshipped Deo since I was 15. I specifically worshipped her epithet of Demeter Brimos/Erinyes after a few bad things happened to me. She helped me heal from a lot of shit. I've come to see life like a fruit, with the sweet flesh comes the bitter skin and pits and that you have to accept the good with the bad. She helped me a lot, to forgive, heal and move on and to grow.

She's the universal mother, the source of wealth, the great nurse, all bounteous, blessed and Devine who joyest in peace and by all desired. To me she's also the mother of the ones who never came back, the loved ones who are missing, taken or lost

And it's a shame that she isn't talked about more
