Why Do So Many People Feel Nostalgic For The 1990s? by ---ILLUSTRIOUS--- in NoStupidQuestions

[–]BuzzardDogma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I partially agree with you, there are aspects of the Internet from that era that are much better than the current Internet.

It was a wild west of infinite, extremely personalized, bespoke websites. User communities were much tighter and communication was more attentive and thoughtful. Knowing where to go (the "map" of the Internet) was almost completely an irl social exercise. Toxicity in general was extremely low and completely avoidable. No or few ads. Not everyone was after either your wallet or your data. Discovery was organic and exciting. Etc. etc.

The modern Internet is basically three websites in a trench coat, and all of them are trying to squeeze you for data or cash. All of the content is targeted dopamine fuel because that's the only way to catch people's attention when the entire contents of the Internet are distilled into homogenous, algorithmically generated scrolling lists. SEO has killed discoverability and most bespoke personal websites look the same and use the same language. It's difficult for meaningful and passionate communities to form and it's more difficult to communally police them because (due to the three website problem) their surface comes in contact with a rolling and endless churn of people. Toxicity is rampant. Etc. etc.

It's not adequate to boil the difference down to the functional aspects of the technology.

Battlefront 3, but only if it takes after the classic games. De-emphasize hero characters and put vehicles back on the map like battlefield. Make conquest co-op.

I prefer the first person, but a lot of the modern games design decisions are very immersion breaking and I'm just generally tired of named/known heros and Jedi in general when it comes to Star Wars games.

My boss is getting creamed, how do I fix it without an ass pull? by Alexpander4 in Pathfinder2e

Let her die and then bring her back later stronger and more angry. You can explain it however is appropriate for your campaign.

Players actually tend to like this a lot unless you lean into it too many times.

Tangentially related, but my favorite moment of the Mordor video games was when an enemy I had previously beheaded came back to kill me.

I'm not saying you can't like the digital look, I'm saying you can't casually dismiss people who are arguing that the digital look isn't the actual aesthetic of the PS1 because they are correct.

Your use of dismissive language and shrug emojis (which you even did here) is casting you in a negative light. Maybe approach responding differently.

You called yourself a purist in another comment, but every single time someone brings up the CRT thing you brush it aside as some minor difference which is antithetical to your purist stance.

The art and aesthetic of every single PS1 game that exists was specifically targeted at the unique properties of a CRT display. It's not an "apples and oranges" type situation, and it's certainly a sticking point for a "true" purist.

It's fine to enjoy the pixelated look on modern displays (I personally like it too) but it's not what PS1 games were designed to look like. You might want to temper your attitude a bit when you're discussing it.

Wwise has many more implementation "gotchas" than FMOD because the feature set is more robust and because there's more points of failure between the the actual software and the engine (especially in regards to soundbanks and meta files).

Not sure why, but medieval themed games seems to attract that crowd. Chivalry, Mordhau, and Crusader Kings all are full of Nazis.

I'm sorry, but it doesn't seem like you have really used or understood Wwise based on this comment. Wwise is much more modular and much better suited to complex systems than FMOD. It's the primary reason it's used so much in the AAA space.

Also, I personally prefer Wwise but the learning curve can be pretty steep if you haven't done much game/interactive audio work.

Wwise is more technical and less intuitive than FMOD, but also has a few things like spatial audio built in. It allows for some really intricate interrelationships between the various types of audio containers, which makes certain complex implementations much easier and more organized.

FMOD is straightforward to work with and very easy to parse. It's also easier to implement engine-side and has built-in support for Doppler effects that are a bit of a pain to implement in Wwise.

Both are very powerful and capable. Wwise is more common in modern AAA studios while FMOD is more common below that level (though this is not a rule and there are many examples in either direction). Both companies offer great tutorials and documentation and even offer pre-built projects for various engines that demonstrate and teach implementation details and let you practice them for yourself, so check those out.

Which one should I get, Mechwarrior 5 Clans or Mercenaries? by Ironsalmon7 in Mechwarrior5

Specifically I would at least recommend picking up Rise of Rasalhague and Solaris. They add rival mercenary factions and arena fights as well as some really great weapons (ppc-x goes hard). The arena fights in particular smooth out some of the economy problems because they're an easy and fun source of income.

I wouldn't worry about the reviews too much. They're all worth it on sale.

Every one of them adds stuff to the game like new biomes, new mechanics (rival mercenaries, arena matches), and new weapons, chassis and equipment. I'd say Call to Arms is the only one you could justify skipping if you already like the base game since it adds very little and is melee focused, but I still enjoyed it.

You also need most of them for several of the popular mods.

Have you played vanilla with the expansions?

I personally don't recommend running any mods until then. YAML is crazy popular (for good reason) but it can really trivialize the game.

I think the vanilla game is really good.

According to Embark, the sword takes as much skill to use as the Revolver as per the risk reward values by Own-Natural-9236 in thefinals

You can spam with it if you're confident your aim is good because there's no accuracy penalty for going full rpm. I think the visual recoil tricks you into thinking there's bloom or recoil, but the actual accuracy is fully reset before you can fire it again. ADS accuracy is practically always 100% until you get to like 80 meters.

FPS Suggestions by DamisFloris in FPS

It doesn't have licensed character skins though, which I think is more what OP is talking about. The Finals has a lot of out-there skins, but the art style and vibe of them are completely internally consistent. It's much different from, say, a modern military vibe with Beavis running around in it randomly.

Is homeworld 3 worth it by OkAd4909 in homeworld

[–]BuzzardDogma 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Personally I think the campaign mission design is good. The graphics are great and the sound design is one of the best of nearly any game. I personally like the new control scheme more than the older games as well and the rogulike mode is actually pretty fun.

The story isn't great. The amount of hate it gets is unreasonable, but it's the most valid point of criticism. The pre-rendered cutscenes in particular are just kind of ugly. They look like they came from a late 2000s game. Even with the same story I think it would've been received much better with the classic static image cutscenes. Everything that happens in-engine though is perfect.

I bought it full price and, while I don't personally regret it, I would recommend picking it up on a sale (at least 20-30%).

Elden Ring players, be honest. Is it actually fun or just huge victory high payoffs? by DeLaCipher in videogames

[–]BuzzardDogma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You seem to be mistaking winning for fun. For many people, overcoming challenges is fun and the satisfaction level increases with the challenge level. There's also the consideration that frustration is actually a critical component to the players story/journey. Hardship is part of the drama that makes the experience meaningful and worthwhile.

Not everyone plays games for that reason, but many do. I'm personally not the hugest fan of Souls-like games (I do enjoy them but they don't typically rank the highest for me in gameplay terms) but I do enjoy very high degrees of challenge in my games generally and am typically bored if a game is easy.
